Few people knew that Jocelyn Fairchild was not Valentine Morgenstern's first love, but Freya Herondale - the daughter of Imogen and Marcus Herondale and Stephen's younger sister.

Valentine and Freya met at the Shadowhunter Academy and fell in love. Her brother Stephen befriended Valentine and joined the Circle. Freya and his mother didn't like this decision. Stephen had changed since then (he thought he was better than the mundanes, the Clave, and his parents, and that pissed Freya off). The girl saw how loyal Stephen had become to Valentine.

The girl hid her affair with Valentine from her parents and friends, because if they found out about it, they would disown her. Despite this, Freya continued the affair, even when Valentine was Jocelyn's husband. She knew Valentine didn't love Jocelyn.

Valentine and his followers worked against the Clave, and after some time Freya's brother wanted to move against Valentine. 2 years later, Stephen was killed during a raid on a vampire nest. Freya was as distraught as her mother, who, after her son's death, took up the position of Inquisitor and punished former members of the Circle.

Some time later, another misfortune befell the Herondale family. Celine (her brother's second wife) committed suicide, and Freya's nephew died. And during the uprising, many members of the Circle died, and Jocelyn escaped with the Mortal Cup. Valentine faked the his death and his son (who has demon blood in him).

Her mother sent her to the London Institute and arranged her marriage to Leo Branwell (an invented character). After the wedding, Freya headed the Institute with husband and pretended to be an exemplary and loving wife to everyone. Freya knew Valentine was alive and had an affair with him because she loved him and couldn't stop thinking about him.

She knew that Valentine was responsible for her brother's death and many evil deeds, but Freya could not turn her back on him. Maybe others thought he was a monster, but she was the one who recognized his gentle face.
