Few people knew that Jocelyn Fairchild was not Valentine Morgenstern's first love. It was Freya Herondale - a night hunter from the elite Herondale family, daughter of Imogen and Marcus Herondale and younger sister of Stephen.
Freya went to the Shadowhunter Academy and there she met Valentine Morgenstern, a friend of her older brother. They both fell in love, it was love at first sight. She felt something for him, even when her brother joined the Circle, although this decision did not please her or their parents.
The blonde girl began to notice disturbing changes in Stephen. Her brother began to consider himself better than the mundanes, the Clave, and even than his parents. His behavior irritated Freya and she was terrified of his loyalty to Valentine.
Although the girl was also involved with Valentine - she had an affair with him, which she hid from everyone. If this were to come to light, her family would disown her and she would be banished from the Shadow World. But despite this risk, Freya continued her affair with Valentine, even when he was married to Jocelyn, She probably subconsciously knew that her lover did not love his wife since he cheated on her with her.
Valentine and his followers worked against the Clave. Freya's brother wanted to go against Valentine in order to be a good father to his unborn child, which he was expecting with his second wife, Céline.
Sometime later, Stephen was killed during a raid on a vampire nest, causing suffering to his family. Freya guessed that it was Valentine's doing, so she confronted him to end their affair.
Imogen Herondale, a mother grieving the death of her son, was offered the position of Inquisitor in Idris. It was known that she accepted the position to get revenge on the Circle for her son's death.
Another tragedy befell the Herondale family. Céline committed suicide, and her son miraculously survived and was taken into the care of Imogen and Freya. At the same time, many members of the Circle died in the uprising, and Jocelyn escaped with the Mortal Cup. Valentine and his son died in a fire.
Freya was suffering from the death of her lover, who killed her brother, and her mother sent her to the London Institute. It was not long before she learned of her arranged marriage to Leo Branwell.
After the wedding, Freya forgot about her deceased lover and focused on running the Institute, being a mother to her nephew, and a good wife to Leo.
