I sit at my desk preparing for the day. Thank god it's Friday! This week has been dragging and I'm usually okay with a slow week, but my kids have been insane this week. Between the girls crying over who dumped who, and the boys bickering about who burped the loudest, I've gone home every day this week with a headache. But hey, that's fifth grade for ya. I wouldn't trade these twerps for anyone. They're actually my favorite class so far.I've been teaching at Pine Brook Elementary for five years now. I taught at a different private school just down the road for three years before this but I hated the private curriculum. It was like we were training robots and I hated seeing the kids miserable. Now I have a great principal who lets me teach how I want to teach and we're slowly making great humans.
Well, the best we can get in this tiny town of Pine Brook in the middle of farm central Kansas.
*knock knock*
"Hey y/n! Need any copies? I'm going to make some real quick." Jaime Wesley asks poking her head in my open door.Jaime is my 'across the hall mate' as Principal Drake says. She was the first to welcome me here and quickly became a great friend to me, even though we've known each other our whole lives. We just hung around different friend groups and didn't really click till after I came back from college. It's not hard because we have the same personality, we're the same age and we like the same things. Oh god that sounds soo lover like. Ew. That would never happen, because well I like girls who aren't exactly like me, and she likes dudes. Thank god.
"Nope I did mine already. I came prepared." I tease her and she rolls her eyes at me.
"You just don't want to have to miss out on the end of the day with the kids." She wiggles her eyebrows.
"What ever do you mean?" I tease and roll my eyes.
"Oh ya know, when a certain actress comes to visit the class like the last four weeks." She wiggles her eyebrows again.
"I haven't got a clue what you're talking about." I play dumb and she huffs.
"Whatever, I gotta get these done before the bell rings, see you and your little girlfriend later!" Jaime teases before leaving my door way and I can hear the clink of her heels retreating further down the hall.
The ringing of the bell doesn't let me think too long of Jaime's comments because I have a heard of 10 and 11 year olds running into my class.
"No running! Hang your stuff up and start on your journal!" I yell so the kids simmer down
"Aw Ms. M. Not the journals again." My biggest project, Matthew sighs hard.
"Cmon Matt, tell me about what big game is on tonight. Or maybe what you're going to do at the Farm Fair tomorrow?"
"Oh yeah! I forgot that's tomorrow." He excitedly grabs a pencil and starts writing in his journal.
The trick with kids most of the time is find things they like and incorporate it into learning. Sure, he thinks he's going to write about the games and prizes he will win, maybe the food. But in reality he's constructing his thoughts into sentences, and working on his grammar and punctuation while creating a creative writing piece.
"Alright kiddos, we have a full day today so once everyone's done writing I want you to meet me on the math carpet." I announce to the class and when only one girl moves to meet me I realize yep, it's going to be a Friday today.
The kids are now in gym, which means it's almost the end of the day. I'm preparing some papers on their desks while I wait for them to come back which will help lead them into interviewing the guests when they arrive. We have been trying to start a school newspaper but not much happens in this little town. That was until MARVEL came along and picked our town to shoot a six month long movie in.
