The sun was slowly settling into the horizon, giving the classroom we were in an orange hue. I looked through any open windows, making sure that there were no teachers or security guards walking by to bust us for being in school so late.

I shuffled the tarot cards  in my hands expertly, taking out five randomly from the deck, placing them symmetrically across the desk in front of me. Riva, one of my closest friends chewed the sides of her cheek nervously, whilst Evangeline - more commonly known as Eva - smiled in anticipation.

Riva closed her eyes and slowly picked up a tarot card from the ones I had placed across the tables. She handed me the blue card that was elegantly decorated with silver paint and gulped nervously - this card would show the pathway her future would follow.

''The Wheel of Fortune: A great change is upon you, some events might change your life completely,’’ I read out to her, her bright green eyes shone out of excitement.

''Maybe I'm going to find a boyfriend!'' she said with a satisfied tone in her voice, before blowing her chestnut brown fringe away from her eyes.

''I'm going to ask Matthew out!'' said Evangeline, leaning back against her chair, her light brown eyes gleaming mischievously.

''Well, it may not be about boyfriends,'' I said, shaking my head and trying to not laugh.

‘’Hmm, I see...Oh How about Peter from history class?’’ Evangeline said in excitement.

‘’Weren’t you listening to Alissa?’’ Riva said poking Evangeline’s forehead, making her chair wobble as she held on to the table for dear life.

We all burst out laughing but stopped dead in our tracks when the door was slammed open. The  student council president, Maria Lynch, walked in proudly, making us cower as we took in her air of authority.

She flicked her raven black hair off her shoulders, snapping us out of our frozen states, and glared at us.

‘’What are you all doing here? You shouldn’t be here if you don’t belong to a club,’’ she said with an accusing tone in her voice.

‘’What are you doing staying so late then?’’ I asked, frowning. School council duties finished ages ago, and as far as I knew, she didn't belong to any other clubs.

She turned up her nose and laughed at me. ‘’I don’t think I need to answer that, Alissa,’’ Maria said walking over to the table.

She picked up one of the tarot cards, holding it into the air to get a good look at it. Her facial expression showed pure confusion, and she looked at the card as if it was the strangest thing in the world.

"You know, having a hobby is nice and all, but can’t you do something normal?’’ she said in an mocking tone.

I glared at her. ‘’Don’t take witchcraft lightly,’’ I said, feeling offended by her comment. If someone wanted witch-craft to be their hobby, then why not? It's much more for us though.

‘’What’s that?’’ Maria asked.

‘’Magic, Spells and rituals...witchcraft has been part of people’s lives since ancient times. The power of darkness can actually perform a miracle. Isn’t it fascinating?’’ I said in a proud voice.

‘’We’re trying to find out what’s going to happen in our future,’’ Riva said, with a grin

Maria sniggered.

‘’She’s not lying,’’ I said

She then stopped and looked back at me, looking as if she was to slap my face.

"Why don’t you read this book?’’ I said taking a copy of The Study of Witchcraft And The History out of my bag.

‘’Here take it!’’ I said in a cheerful voice.

Maria sneered, pushing the book out of my hand. ‘’Ridiculous.’’ She slammed the card back onto the table, walking out of the room and slamming the door behind her.

‘’Wow, what a bitch,’’ muttered Riva

I picked up the card that Maria had looked at. "The Fool," I whispered, examining every angle of the card. "It represents fear and stupidity," I said, making Riva and Eva giggle.

"Wow, that is accurate," Eva said, still giggling.

‘’Well, let’s call it a day shall we?" I sighed.

''I might visit the antique shop near my house, I heard that the owner added some new books,'' Evangeline said

''That's great, make sure that you show us what you bought!'' Riva said excitedly.

We headed towards the gate ready to go home.
