the passers-by have made peace
with the fact that the fish will never look back at them
from behind their thick enclosure

they will go on to live their lives,
separated not only by glass,
but also by arrogance

the sun shines where the fish don't see,
and the tides turn where the passers-by don't feel

though they were once one,
evolution crept its way into every crack in the walls
and tore them down

and now the fish hide in the sand,
speaking through vibrations
and praying that others don't see them

whilst everyone outside their confined walls
can enjoy the sun
without ever sparing the fish tank a second glance

it's unfair,
though that's all that life will ever be,
and this is the only life the fish have ever known

in their little world,
away from those outside
who do nothing but reap and writhe

though sometimes they really do wonder
what the garden of eden looks like
