Annick sends me a look, but I just smile and shrug at their antics. Boys will be boys, I guess.
The class goes quiet as soon as Ms. Couret turns back towards us, and she has a hopeful expression on her face as she poises us a question. "Now, who here knows about The Beatles?"
My hand shoots up in the air quite eagerly, and Ms. Couret seemed very happy with my enthusiasm.
"They're a British band," I answer, and Ms. Couret gives me a nod of confirmation. I sit myself back down with pride, and as soon as the teachers back is turned towards us, I hear Dupin and Descamps start whispering. I look back to see both boys, leaned forward towards Applebaum's table.
"Give it back," Dupin hisses. Joseph removes his thumb from his lips, and his eyes dart around. It seems like he's still doing the bad habit, even after his mother's consistent nagging. "Are the pages stuck together?"
The question makes me giggle, and even when I thought that I was being as quiet as a mouse, I feel a whack to the head. In surprise, I look back to scold whoever hit me, and I just get met with a glare from Joseph. He shushes me before turning his attention back to Applebaum, and I roll my eyes. How dramatic, honestly.
"Quiet, she'll hear you!" Applebaum reprimands, and he opens his bag as carefully as he could and the magazine makes an appearance in front of me for the first time.
I'm not surprised by the magazine itself - Moreso, I'm quite surprised that it's still in once piece and isn't crunchy with every flip of the page. An idea forms itself in my head, a mischievous smile on my face. I lean a bit closer to Annick, and I whisper into her ear. "Grab it before they can."
She sends me a quick side-glance, and I see the corners of her lips quirk up.
Applebaum passes it over to Dupin, but Annick is quick to snatch it away and the expression on the boys' face makes my smile even wider. She passes it onto me, and I do my best to not touch it as much. I don't even want to think what they had done towards these abysmal pages...
Dupin and Descamps reach over, their hands prying to try and snatch it back but I keep a good grip. I can feel the thin color pages crumbling slightly under the tight grip, but oh well, they were inflicting it themselves.
Ms. Couret looks back at the commotion and all 4 of us straighten up, acting as if we were paying attention for a split second.
They start prying again when Ms. Couret turns her head back towards the blackboard, and I hiss at a sudden pinch to my side, turning my head back. Joseph gives me a stern look of urgency, and I stick my tongue out at him.
He rolls his eye and they both share a look before starting to get more aggressive with their attacks.
In a state of panic, I pass it over to Annick, who furrows her brows at me before calmly throwing it back to Applebaum. "Not me!" The blonde boy whisper-shouts, and he throws the magazine to the air.
It's like all time slows down. The whole class (along with Ms. Couret) is watching the magazine flew itself across the room before landing...
Directly on Michèle's desk.
---
I feel kind of bad for Ms. Couret, because it's always in her class that something happens.
The wooden-pole that I'm leaning against feels quite moist against my skin, but I need to eavesdrop. I need to know what the consequences are, and who they're going to punish.
