Maya was doing what she always did. Watching. She was watching the little forest road waiting for any threat to emerge. She had her staff in her hand and wore her normal outfit, her light blue and white robe. She was sitting on the towns walls, which were not built up very high. Riverlong was not a rich town but still it was Mayas home.
She looked at her staff. It was a long white staff with a blue orb held by a dragon head design. Maya the dragon priest, known throughout the land. The only person that brought travelers to the village. Maya wasn't a show off but she helped where it was needed. One of the last of the Dragon Priest. No one was interested in being a Dragon Priest anymore. They complained the training was to hard.
Maya sighed and as she did so her head hung down a little low letting her brown hair fall over her shoulder. She pushed it back up and stretched. She was sick of waiting. She wanted to make herself helpful, but the stupid villagers insisted she couldn't help on July 30th, Her birthday. Her sixteenth birthday to be exact. Most girls loved their birthdays. A day off everyone enjoys that.
Everyone but Maya that is. A day off meant twenty-four hours of doing nothing. She could go out and find some paints from one of the more popular towns but that would be a three day trip and leaving the town undefended for that long was just something she wished not to do.
Maya tried distracting herself. She looked over to where the two twins, Ana and Kia, where playing. They were playing with the empty berry baskets. That was something Maya could do. She got up and walked over to the twosome. They looked up at her with big smiles. Their smiles were so cute.
"Can I have one of the baskets so I can go pick black berries?" Maya asked bending down and looking at the two.
"You are not suppose to work today." Ana says with a sassy hair flip. Strange for a nine year old.
"todays your birthday go play a game or something." Kia adds trying to give me a cold shoulder.
"I was going to bake a pie though." Maya said faking a pout. That always gets the twins, they loved pie.
"Okay but don't overwork yourself." Ana said handing Maya a basket. Maya smiled and started to walk out of the village. She started her way towards the bottom of the mountain where the blackberry bushes were easiest to reach.
"I won't" She called back not bothering to look back to the twins. She was just eager to have something to do. Baking a few pies might not be much but it made time go faster.
Maya started picking as soon as she made it to the blackberry bushes. She worked fast and only picked the nice juicy berries. The sour ones would make for a nasty pie. She moved to each bush only grabbing the over ripe ones or the perfectly ripe ones. The other ones would be left to grow.
Maya dropped the basket when a loud growl-like noise erupted. She looked around. That was the sound of a dragon. It was loud, and deep. So it hard to be a dragon. Maya wasn't scared, for she didn't get scared. She grabbed her staff and looked around for a cave. Dragons were attached to caves, gems, and of course their favorite snacks, humans.
This was the best spot for a dragon to live, the small little town, the big caves in the mountain sides to hide their treasures, and the only flaw was the dragon priest who has slain many dragons and isn't afraid to kill another.
Maya spotted a cave the sound was coming from. It sounded like a dragon growling, best guess was that one of the villagers was being an idiot once again. Maya headed into the cave and let her eyes adjust to the dark. No gems or jewels were anywhere just the sound of the dragon. She wondered further into the cave.
The sound was almost like thunder. Booming in the cave. Maya new this dragon was eirther exhausted or huge.Black wings were draped on the ground and a black tail, he had black hair and little horns that came out of it. He was wearing a pair of old riped pants and no shirt. He had scars on his chest and arms. Yet, he looked peaceful snoring like that.
Maya knew exactly what he was. A half dragon, humans who where born woth dragon abilites, an element power, wings, and the likes. He turned in his sleep and Maya readied her staff, just to realize how silly she was being. He was sleeping, she shouldn't be so jumpy.
Then his eyes opened reviling a dark red. He stared at Maya, who was looking down at him. He just stayed as if he didn't move she wouldn't see him. Maya cocked her head.
"Who are you?" His voice was cold and rough as if barely used. Just when Maya was about to speak his stomache growled, ruining the half dragons tough act.
