the neon lights of the carousel flicker against the dusky sky, casting a playful glow over the bustling amusement park. it's strangely packed for an amusement park in a small town like ours. but then also, it's everyone's last chance to enjoy summer before monday comes and brings the new school year. senior year. a sigh leaves my throat at the thought. on one side, the sweet scent of graduation is so close, i can almost smell it. but on the other, college applications and simply growing up weigh me down. life's getting serious, but as i turn my head up to look at jeno, i remember that today is not the day to be thinking of those things. i can't help but to feel a surge of excitement as i watch the colorful lights glimmer in his eyes. today we're having one last night of fun before monday kicks our asses. that's what we promised each other at least. we've been wanting to come here all summer, but with him leaving to visit family and me being dragged to seoul by mine, we never had the chance to and it was pushed back to the last day. but now that we're here, there's not a thing i would change.

"the ferris wheel," his voice cuts me out of my thoughts as we suddenly halt in the middle of the path, people circling around us to get past. "that's what you wanted to get on, right?" he asks after i don't answer and this time i nod. "yeah," i in fact do, despite my fear of heights. the thought of arriving at the perfect time and taking pictures of the setting sun is making me a bit overconfident. "you sure?" his eyebrows are knitted when our eyes meet, "won't you get scared?" he reminds me of my fear, which momentarily makes me gulp. but the anxious feeling is quickly cut off by a realization. he remembers my fear of heights? jeno's always been this way. he's the type of friend who remembers every detail of the things you tell him by heart. or at times he's ordered me food home in the middle of the night when i complained about being hungry. either he's incredibly charming unintentionally, or he just knows how to make a girl happy with acts of service.

"i'll be fine," i grin up at him, "now come on, we need to hurry before the sun sets." i reach out for his arm and drag him along with myself towards the ticket booth. the lady behind the counter puts her phone aside when she sees us approaching and doesn't even let me speak before she throws the price for two tickets at my head, her voice loud and monotonous. i grimace at how impolite she is, but before i can speak, jeno reaches past me to hand her the money. "i wanted to pay," i turn around and scowl at him. he laughs and shrugs, "i guess you owe me something now." i only roll my eyes in reply and start making my way up the few metal stairs towards the ferris wheel. i feel my knees get a little wobbly as we stand in line to wait for our turn. the line in front of us moves quicker than expected and brings us closer to finally getting on. when it's our turn and a booth halts in front of us, jeno steps aside to let me get in first before he follows. i quickly sit as the booths begins moving up, slightly rocking back and forth from the friction. my hands are tightly clasped around the edge of the - in my opinion - dangerously slippery seat, watching as we lift further and further off the ground. jeno is seated on the opposite side of the booth, and now laughs, "see, i knew you'd be scared." i snap my head in his direction at the sound of his mocking undertone. if there's one thing about me, it's that i hate being wrong. "no i'm not," i quickly reply, forcibly stabilizing my voice as it threatens to waver. he lifts his eyebrows as his eyes wander down to my hands, which now feel like they're glued to the seat beneath me. like stung by a bee, i rip both my hands off the seat and grab my phone out of my pocket. "we reached the top, i should take pictures now," i try to distract him. he only shakes his head as he watches me struggle to keep my shaky hands steady to snap a picture. "want me to take them?" he asks, but i quickly shake my head. so you can tease me for the rest of my life? no, thank you.
