Savannah Parker sniffled a little, shivering as the wind pounded at her back. Her parents were making her walk home today, and on top of that her best friend Freddy Freeman was sick. She was sure that she had caught the cold as well, because her nose and turned runny and red, and her head had that odd fuzzy feeling that made her want to lie down and drink chicken noodle soup through a twisty straw.
She licked her chapped lips, hating how cold it was. Only October, and she swore the weather was trying to push her out of Philadelphia. She wouldn't mind much if it happened, though. Nothing interesting ever happened in town. Sure, there was the occasional minor superhero that popped up, but they usually faded away with time. Savannah needed something to busy herself with until she turned eighteen and could move away.
Finally, she reached a bus stop and sat on the chilly bench, grateful she was at least wearing her favorite pair of warm gray joggers. Sulking, she looked down at her phone and checked the time, noticing she had been walking for about ten minutes. Her house was still a good fifteen minutes away, so she would have to tough it out in the home stretch. For now, she shielded herself against the biting wind in the little bus stop shelter, scrolling through her phone for a moment before she would get up again and finish her cold journey home.
She was so busy watching her phone that she didn't notice the spider, a relatively small but resilient creature, that had begun to crawl up her pant leg. The spider had dropped out of nowhere and landed here, in Philadelphia, a few days before. It had searched high and low for it's victim, but the right person was yet to present itself. But then it caught sight of the young Parker girl and felt a pulsing in it's brain that traveled to the tips of it's legs, the stripes that were once dark and matched the rest of it's dark gray body now glowing yellow-green. On the spider's back was an emblem, a droplet of similar colors to the rings on it's legs. Almost too small for the human eye to read, the number "38" was printed in black in the center of the droplet.
Unbeknownst to Savannah, the spider now shimmying up her sweater sleeve had traces of pit viper mixed into it's DNA. Another odd experiment created in a lab somewhere in a different universe, one that would change the fate of this universe forever. The spider launched itself onto her hand and poised itself on her wrist, promptly sinking it's fangs into her hand. The venom designed to genetically modify any DNA it came in contact with began to spread through her veins at the speed of light. Finally feeling the odd prick on her hand, Savannah dragged her eyes from the glowing screen and noticed a spider, which was quickly scurrying away from her gaze. Thinking nothing of it, she smacked the spider and flicked it's body onto the sidewalk, taking that as a cue to head off.
Finally making it home, she greeted the empty house with open arms. Both of her parents were working and seeing as it was only 3:37, she had another two hours before either would come home. Feeling hungry, she set her backpack down and began to untie her shoes. That's when a suddenly pungent smell hit her nostrils, a smell so sweet and thick it made her head swim. She blinked a few times, resolving to kicking off her shoes and turning to where she was certain the scent was coming from. There, on the table in the dining room, sat a glass full of roses. They were fresh, of course, but Savannah had never smelled any flower so sweet and pungent. Almost unable to take the smell any longer, she picked up the vase and placed it outside on the patio, a space sheltered by the huge overhang supported by two large wooden pillars. She breathed a sigh of relief, finally heading to the pantry and pulling out a bag of Cheetos. Smiling in content, she ripped open the bag and stuck a finger in, pulling out a cheeto and stuffing it in her mouth.
