Barrel: Barrel types are categorized into rifled and smoothbore. Rifled barrels have spiraled grooves or angles inside, inducing spin to stabilize the projectile. Smoothbore barrels stabilize the projectile through other means or when rifling is unnecessary. Gun variations are often identified by interior barrel diameter and associated projectile size. Bore diameter is measured conventionally in decimal fractions of an inch or in millimeters. Shotguns may use the gauge system, indicating the number of pellets with the same diameter as the bore produced from one pound of lead. Some British ordnance reports the weight of the weapon's usual projectile.

Projectile: Gun projectiles vary, from simple single-piece items like bullets to casings containing payloads such as shotshells or explosive shells. There are also complex projectiles like sub-caliber projectiles and sabots. The propellant can be air, an explosive solid, or an explosive liquid. Some variations, like the Gyro jet and others, combine the projectile and propellant into a single unit.

Magazine: In repeating firearms, the magazine is the place that stores the ammunition that has not been fired. It is a removable, spring-powered ammunition storage and feeding device that is inserted into a semi-automatic firearm.

Hand Guard: A handguard (also known as the for end or forearm) on firearms is a barrel shroud specifically designed to allow the user to grip the front of the gun.

Pistol Grip: On a firearm or other tools, a pistol grip is a distinctly protruded handle underneath the main mechanism, to be held by the user's hand at a more vertical angle, similar to how one would hold a conventional pistol.

Trigger: A trigger is a mechanism that actuates the function of a ranged weapon such as a firearm, air gun, crossbow, or speargun.

Trigger Guard: A trigger guard is a protective loop surrounding the trigger of a firearm designed to prevent unwanted contact with the trigger, which may cause an accidental discharge. Other devices that use a trigger-like actuator mechanism, such as inhalers, crossbows and power tools, may also have trigger guards.
