The sun was gleaming through the branches of trees, trickling through like falling water. There was a single strip of road that led through the forest, and on this single road drove a lone car. There were three people inside the vehicle, an older man behind the wheel. He had dark skin and black hair with a short and well-trimmed beard. He wore a blue button up shirt with a white long sleeve shirt underneath. His jeans were a dark tan color and his shoes were dark brown dress shoes. A silver watch gleamed on his left wrist as the sun peaked in and out through the windows. A girl who was about the age of nineteen sat in the passenger seat. Her skin was similar to the color of Mocha. She wore a blue and white baseball cap, a large blue embroidered D on the front. Her dark curly hair was tied back in pigtails with a few loose strands of hair framing her face. Her shirt was a light yellow long sleeve, with about four or five buttons near the top. Three of the buttons were holding the bottom part of the slit closed as the top two folded over and she wore a dark blue leather jacket over it. Her pants were almost like a goldish-green with plenty of pockets. Her boots were dark grey with orange laces and a belt trap around the top. At her feet rested a tan bookbag with two pockets on the front and a giant space for books and other things. The kid in the back had dark skin, but it wasn't as deep as the man who sat in the front. He had dark brown hair that poofed up into a small afro. He wore a Disco Broccoli t-shirt and blue jeans. The family drove in silence—but the girl's nervous sigh broke the silence, making the man driving look over.
"You alright, Clementine?" The man asked, a small smile plastered on his face.
"Just...a little nervous, Lee," Clementine replied, looking out the window as trees and grass whirred by.
"It'll be okay," Lee said reassuringly, his eyes shifting back to the road.
"I know...I just can bear the thought of being away from you and AJ," Clementine shook her head.
"Do you have to go, Clem?" AJ, the kid in the backseat asked.
"I'll be back for break soon enough, goofball," Clementine told him. "I've wanted to study art history for a long time, so...yes. I have to go."
Clementine was being taken to Ericson's Academy, an art and music school that wasn't too far from their home in Macon, Georgia.
"Well...here we are," Lee said as he pulled up to the grand iron gates that bore the name of the school above it. The giant buildings inside were surrounded by a tall stone wall.
Clementine sighed softly and unbuckled herself. Lee and AJ did the same as she opened the car door and stepped out of the vehicle and grabbed the bookbag that was on the car floor. She carefully slung it over her shoulder before she shut the door. She was barely able to turn around before she was almost tackled by AJ. He hugged her tightly, not wanting to let go. Lee walked around from the other side of the car, carrying the small suitcases Clementine had in the back. He shook his head with a soft chuckle before he set them down.
"Please, don't go!" AJ begged, looking up at Clementine. "I don't know what I'll do while you're gone..." The boy sniffled, burying his face in his sister's stomach.
Clementine shook her head with a light snicker, gently wrapping her arms around AJ. "You'll find plenty of things to do," she told him. "I'm sure of it."
"But you make everything more fun..." AJ pouted, looking up at Clem before his gaze shifted to Lee. "Please don't let her go."
"AJ..." Lee sighed softly, before he rested a hand on the boy's shoulder. "She wants to continue her education, buddy. We'll be back to visit soon."
"And I promise I'll call every night," Clem crouched to be level with his height.
"But it won't be the same!" AJ whined, staring up at Clem.
