My mother storms into our room. She wakes us up.- Wake up Avery, come on!
I wake up. She does the same with my brother.
- You too, Raviere, wake up.
- What's going on, Mom? I ask her.
- Hurry up and get dressed. I'll take care of your bags.
My brother and I look at each other.
- Mom, we need to know what's going on. Why are you so distraught all of a sudden?
- Because it's there. At the front door.
- Who are you talking about, Mom?
- Your father. Get dressed quickly!
We both get out of bed. Put on our clothes from the night before. I put on my shoes. Raviere does the same as you.
She hands me a bag which she quickly fills. We hear banging on the door. I'm getting scared but I don't want to show my mother.
- Here you are! I've put some clean clothes in for you. I'll also give you a hundred and fifty dollars.
- Patricia, open this fucking door! If you don't, I'll kick it in!
She opens the window.
- You're going through the window.
- But I thought he was in prison.
- I guess he got a reduced sentence. Come out Raviere.
My brother goes out first.
- Your turn, Avery. Hold the keys. Get out of town. Get as far away as you can.
He drums against the door again.
- I want to see my children. They're mine too.
- Don't stop for anything, I understand," she adds.
- Aren't you coming with us? I ask her.
- I have to hold him back.
- No, Mom, you have to come with us.
She begs me to go. I don't want to leave her alone with him. We hear a loud creak. I quickly open the window and throw out the bag. She closes it immediately. I realize that no matter how much I beg her, she won't come. She's not coming. We run to the car and both get in.
- Why isn't she coming?
- We have to leave Raviere.
I don't answer her question. I switch on the engine and start off with a bang.
- But why are we leaving without her? says Raviere.
- Raviere, fasten your seatbelt.
- You've got to turn around! We can't leave her alone with that lunatic!
He tries to take control of the vehicle but I quickly take over.
- Damn it! Are you trying to kill us? I told you to wear your seatbelt. You know we can't go back there. We have to do what Mom said and get out of town.
I hear a click. He's finally buckled up. I speed up and get out of town.
