Today was Yule, which meant it was the day for my witch's name to be given by the goddess. Instead of celebrating my birthday, I was turning 13. A witch name is given to protect your birth given name. So, no real harm comes to you. But you still had to cast protection on that name. Which I didn't understand but besides that my birth name will be forgotten. It will be erased in everyone's minds and replaced with my witch's given name. The alpha will guide me through the forest and leave me with my coven.
I have finished my yule log that will be used in the ceremony. I had to carve my name into it. I stared at it. I sat in my bed and tried to calm myself down a bit. It was important day for anyone that's a witch, but giving up a name my mother gave me, hurts. Your supposed to be excited and I get it but I just want to let it go not just yet.
I was brought out of my thoughts as someone knocked on my door.
"Come in" I said. Ronan walked in with a grin on his face. My eyes widened with surprise.
"What are you doing you know you're not supposed to be here" I said while trying to push him out of my room but he didn't budge.
"Look I know you're nervous about the whole name changing stuff but look" Ronan says as he pulls something out of his pocket. It was a locket. He grabs my hand by surprise and places the locket in my hand. I looked at him weirdly, I was about to open it before he stopped me. "Don't open in until after the ceremony," he says.
"What is up with you, you've been acting weird lately?" I asked him as I handed the locket back and faced my back towards him. I lift my hair up, signaling him to put it on. I could feel his hands shake from nervousness. His hands felt cold, he must have been training.
"There" Ronan says ignoring my question. I put my hair down and sit back on my bed. Ronan's goes to look at my log. "So you just burn the log or what?" He asks.
"Basically, and then the name carved into the log will change and then I get to my mark which is like a birthmark but a witches mark" I explain. I felt in the coat I was wearing; it was thought to keep me warm. It was long in order to hide my dress until I'm forced to take off everything that keeps me warm and walk outside barefoot. My face was practically red from how hot I felt.
I have been using this thick coat since the beginning of December in order to prepare me for today, somehow. My father didn't understand either when he gave it to me before leaving to who knows where.
"Holy shit your face is red as an apple" Ronan pointed out, I glared at him. "I can't wait to take all of this off," I whined. Ronan went quiet, I watched him pick at the log for a moment. "I don't want to forget your name, Dahlia," he spoke.
"Is this why you've been acting weird? Look it's fine it's not like I'm going to disappear" I replied to him. He started to fiddle with his necklace. "Everything is going to go fine and then we're going to celebrate my birthday after the ceremony is done so chill dude" I say with a small chuckle at the end.
Ronan's father, Alexander, suddenly walked in. "Dahlia it's time- Ronan what are you doing here go wait with the others" he said and Ronan left in a hurry. He walks over to my desk and grabs the log. "Let's go"
We walked down the stairs, and I noticed how quiet it was. This house was never quiet. The house belongs to the retired Alpha, Ronan's grandfather. They took me in after my father decided he wanted to travel if that's what you want you call it.
Once we were in front of the door and I took off my coat, mittens and shoes. We walked out the door and I couldn't feel the cold, I felt warm. We started walking off the porch, and once my feet touched the snow. I couldn't feel how cold the snow was. Alexander put his arm out for me to grab. We started walking towards the forest.
"Are you nervous?" Alexander spoke. "Not really or at least not anymore" I replied back.
"When I retire you might have well been Ronan's second hand, that boy is going to need a lot more help than anything" he says, I look at him confused. "I thought I had to serve you?" I asked, and he laughs at my response. "You have a lot to learn, child. An alpha must be bonded to a witch and our bond is different-" he stops walking and I turn to face him. "You're like the daughter I never had and I do not wish for you to put your life on the line for me but to help lead Ronan, that boy follows you like the plague" Alexander finishes explaining, I didn't know what to say but nod in response. We continued walking towards the edge of the pack lines.
Once we were near the edge, Alexander lets me go and handed me the log. "Do you want me to wait for you?" He asked me. "As much as I want you too, I think it's best if you just head back, I don't know how long this will take" I responded, he nodded. I walked off the pack grounds and just walked towards the lake.
I had to learn my way to the lake just by looking at the map once and then going based on memory. It was a pain in the ass, I always ended up lost. Then there was a week where I had to learn the way to the lake based on intuition. Alexander had blind folded me and put earplugs in, then off I went. I tripped a lot and ran into a bunch of trees, but I learned the way. It's carved into my mind.
The night was dark but the moon was able to light my path. I wasn't far from the lake now. I could see a dim light up a head. That must be my coven. I heard a bush move and I looked towards the direction of the bush. I waited a moment and there was nothing. I continued walking, hoping that Ronan wasn't stupid enough to follow me.
When I got close to the light, I noticed it was a fire. I looked around and there were four other girls coming to view. Thank the goddess I'm not the only one late. Everyone had their log with them. Somehow all our grandmothers knew each other. My grandmother was a witch but wasn't in a coven. We all gathered around the fire in a circle. A girl with long black hair and dark browns eyes spoke. "Let begin"
One by one we started to put our logs in the fire. The fire grew and we took a step back. As the fire grew the more the snow around us melted. I didn't really understand what was going on as much as I should. I was learning from my grandmothers' grimoires and somethings weren't really written down. Like Yule I didn't know about it until Henry, Ronan's grandfather, had told me since he knew about my grandmother.
"It came as a scene from an old picture postcard, Of Victorian ladies with skates on their feet" one girl started to sing and the rest of us begin the dance. It's just to celebrate yule, nothing serious.
When we were dancing, we started to partner up. Then we switched partners, I was partnered up with the only person I somewhat knew. "U learned the dance" Violet whispered to me excitedly. "Trust me I this is the only dance I know" I whispered back. We separated and we gently spun separate directions. When I stopped, I was in the arms of the girl with black hair. The girl had finished singing and it was the end of the dance. Even if there was just four of us for the dance most of the dance, I had passed her most of the time but it was because the dance with four people is a little weird in my opinion. Its best with more people to dance with.
"I'm Hazel" she introduced herself. "I'm Dahlia until the log is almost done burning" I say and shake her hand. "Looks like we don't need to wait much longer, look" Hazel pointed at the fire. "Guess the dance was long enough." Hazel goes and gather up by the fire and I see the bush move. Everyone was distracted looking at the flames. I picked up a rock and threw it at the bush.
"Ow!" I knew that voice, it was Ronan. Before I could say anything else I was dragged to the fire by Violet.
We were back in a circle. I looked around to see where Ronan had run off too. Violet elbowed me to pay attention. Suddenly I saw a vision, my name. It felt more like I was forgetting a memory but I wasn't. I stared at my log and saw my name change. Lilith, it said, everyone was exited for their name. I stayed quiet and didn't know how to feel about it.

I was walking back to the house and all I could think about was my name. I didn't get a witch's mark either. River gotten hers on her wrist it looked like an owl, not very clearly but you can make out the silhouette of an owl. Ronan popped out in front of me.
"Ahh! you little-" I stopped myself from finishing my sentence and punched him in the arm. "Ow! what was that for!" Ronan shouted at me. I rolled my eyes and continued walking. "Da-" my eyes widen and I quickly ran towards him. I covered my hand over his mouth. "You shouldn't remember my name, what did you do" I asked him. He raises his hand up in defeat.
"Nothing!" he responded back. There was no way he could do to prevent the change. He could've written in or carved it into a tree but my name will still be changed.
"Ok, this is what we are going to do. You can't say my birth name, ever. My name is Lilith if you ever say my birth name bad things can happen to the pack" I explained to him. "Do you have your knife with you?" I asked. He nodded and pulled it out of his pocket. I did a small cut on my thumb and grabbed Ronan's hand and did the same. He hissed in pain, and I pressed our thumbs together. "Written in blood you may no longer remember my birth and let it be forgotten in the ashes" I say. "Say it" I tell him. He looked hesitant; he didn't want to do it but I knew he would give in.
"Written in blood I no longer remember your birth name, let it be forgotten in the ashes" he says. I looked into his eyes and saw the glare of magic. Only another witch can tell if magic has been done to him. I felt a sting on my chest but I ignored it. I breathed out in relief; it wasn't just for my sake but for the future of his pack. There may not be many witches' left, even the first bloods are losing their healers. Regardless my name is tied to the pack and if they take me down so will their protection.
The warmth spell was vanishing. "Ok let's go back I'm starting to feel the cold" I say speed walking away in a hurry. Ronan got in front of me again, he took off his jacket at put it on me. He then turned around and bent down a little.
"Get on my back" Ronan said. "No, I can walk- ow" I say and felt the cold burn my feet. "See your spell is wearing off. Just get on my back until we get back onto pack grounds." He explained. I did what he said.
I leaned my head on his shoulder. I felt drained, I was using earth magic to guide me to the lake. Along with fire to keep me warm.
"How did meeting your coven go" Ronan asked. "It was okay, they were nice. I met the girl from 2 weeks ago there." I replied back. "River?" He said, I nodded in response. We stayed silent for a bit. I didn't mind, neither did Ronan. He felt really warm.
Ronan smelled of cinnamon and ginger, I liked how he smelled. He was probably helping out in the kitchen. "Lilith, you look nice in that dress" Ronan said. Even though he said it so calmly I could feel his heart racing. I forgot about my dress; it was white with sleeves. It went up to my knees. I was wearing the stupid coat for long that I forgot what I wear underneath.
"Thank you and you look nice too, I was surprised you dressed up for once" I replied back. "Says the girl who goes to school with pajamas" he retorted back. "You got me their Leslie."
"I hate my mother for telling you my middle name" Ronan groaned out. "Ronan Leslie Reed, mmm your father is so great with picking out names"
"Hey Leslie is my grandmothers name what about your Lilith Sloane Harris, sounds like you're calling out three different kids" he said back. "You have a point there" I let him win this. "What is this Lilith admitting to defeat!" He started to run. I held onto him tighter. "Calm down or else you're going to drop me!" I shouted at him.
