Liv's POV
The room was dark. Liv could hear the machines beeping and the ventilator breathing for her. She could hear people walking around and the sounds of paper rustling and someone crying right next to her. She knew the doctor was doing everything he could to wake her up but it wasn't working. She was awake though, she just had to open her eyes. That's all she had to do. Open her eyes and she could see Sierra, Colby and Sam. Her mind went to Sam as she listened to the two people talking outside her room.
She thought of the way he made her laugh and the way he laughed. Even if the joke was stupid. She remembered the way his smile would always reach his eyes no matter who he was with, he was always smiling with her. She wondered why that was. She wondered why there were some days he would be crying but as soon as she entered the room, he would stop and smile, not wanting to make her worried. She noticed how his eyes would flicker to her lips when they would talk or when they had done a video call. She felt it when he would hold on for longer than what he was supposed to in a hug.
Liv felt safe with him. She felt safe enough to call him in the middle of the night when she's had a bad dream or when she just couldn't sleep. She couldn't help but stare at him when he walks away or picture him when she's bored. Every time they hugged, she questioned if she really felt the butterflies or if her mind was making it up. She would watch Sierra and Colby and wish for that. She wished for it to be her and Sam.
In a way she felt glad when Kat left. She loved her, but she couldn't think of Sam like that when Kat was still here. Kat was a great friend to her and she felt so guilt about feeling happy when she left. She knew that Kat was doing great and even had a new boyfriend in England. She saw how happy Kat was, she knew that Kat wouldn't hate her.
Liv also knew she couldn't tell Sam how she felt.
She heard someone sit down next to her and grab her hand. She felt the same person kiss her hand.
"I can't lose you. You're my best friend Livvy. Please come back." She heard Sam saying through sobs. "Please wake up."
She tried to move her finger with luck. She didn't think that he felt it when he didn't react. She heard people coming into the room. She assumed it was nurses.
"Sam. You have to eat." She heard Colby's voice say.
"I can't. I don't want to leave her, Colby."
"I know. But you have to eat." Colby begged.
"Come on Sam." She heard Sierra.
She felt Sam let go of her hand and heard them leave the room. She felt alone again. The nurse had come in and started messing with her, not talking. She begged for the nurse to start talking. Even if it's just medical jargon.
Liv couldn't go five minutes without talking or doing something so having to lie in a bed not being able to move or talk was torture for her. It felt like forever until she heard footsteps again. Sam.
She felt her heartbeat start going fast and her brain running with things she loved about him.
Love? Who said anything about love? Well she did love how his smile would make anyone else smile. She did love how he would drink some water or soda after each two bites of food he took. She did love how he would open the door for others. Fuck. She did love him. They haven't kissed and she already loves him.
"Doctor! Help!" Sam yelled. Suddenly she could feel people all around her, she felt someone give her a shot which made her toes twitch. She heard the doctors deciding that it was time to leave when her heart slowed down. If only they had given her a minute. She felt Sam take her hand again and sit down when they finally did leave the room.
