Lyra Lani was holding her arms out in welcome.
I noted that her arms were slightly bloodied and there was another splash marring her delicate chin and silky blonde curls.
But both women were heedless as Vanna Rae embraced her.
Clearly old friends.
I was a bit jealous. Having never had a she-wolf to confide in like that.
Only those that raised me.
But now I had a mate, and it would be nice to discuss what that meant with someone.
As if sensing my thoughts, Vanna Rae peered back at Killian. Returning to hug him as well. Then she turned her attention to me.
I was astonished by how truly striking she was this close. With gorgeous blue eyes. Smooth light blonde hair and a figure that one as skinny as me was sure to envy.
"And you," She shook my shoulder lightly. "You I must thank for helping bring my brother back to me."
She smiled up at Killian.
"Am I to understand you are his mate?"
I hesitated only a moment before looking at Killian for an answer.
"You'd be correct." He said decisively.
Making me blush furiously.
"No shame in that." She lifted my chin.
"Come." She hooked my hand over her arm. "We've much to talk about." She began leading me a distance away so we could whisper conspiratorially.
And suddenly, just like that...I was not so lonely.
That night there was a warm fire. And an array of meats roasting over spits. Amidst much celebration.
Killian and Aviari had refused to partake. Citing that just in-case Detry planned a turnabout ambush, or Irasus herself were to return, they intended to stay collected.
But Vanna Rae sat with us. Lyra Lani and I were sharing a leather pouch of something that tasted as if it had long ago molded.
Something Vanna Rae had cleverly, in my foresight, refused.
However, she was willing to laugh with us.
The drink was making me feel deliciously light and far friendlier then usual. The three of us were soon giggling and leaning on each other.
"Look at them." The one called Vanquish remarked.
"Our women are sodden." Draven remarked.
"Indeed." Killian said with a smile.
"I was thinking they're beautiful." Vanquish corrected. Sitting up a bit straighter to get a better look.
"They're certainly that." Killian agreed.
"But better then that," Draven remarked. "Mine fought by my side, vicious as any male."
"She certainly did." The other men nodded.
"I'd certainly have been terrified, if she headed for me." Racer added.
They all laughed.
Making the women turn suspicious eyes on them.
They straightened and looked away. Staring into the fire innocently.
"Did you see that?" Lyra Lani remarked.
"I did..." Vanna Rae agreed.
"What?" I blurted. Not following.
"They were laughing at us."
"I say we do something about that." Lyra Lani set down the leather pouch which sloshed slightly and the three of us were on our feet. Stumbling wayward paths to leap upon our males.
Vanna Rae spread her arms and plowed over three of them.
They fell back. Reaching over each other to catch us.
Draven sniffed her direction. Stiffening as he took in another sniff.
"What?" Racer asked.
"You don't scent that?' Draven stood.
"What?"
The Asara Alpha's gaze was locked on Vanna Rae who now lie on the ground between Hunter and Racer.
She looked away guiltily. As if she already knew what he'd say.
"Alpha's do tend to have a better nose." Killian remarked. "Do share with us what you're catching."
"Her smell has changed."
"I know." Vanquish said. Giving her a warm look over Hunter's shoulder.
She flushed.
"The Asara's first pups are being carried by the Gallion Princess." Vanquish murmured proudly.
Three male hands landed over her flat belly. She ducked her forehead against Racer's chest as if to hide from the intensity of the gazes on her.
Lyra Lani covered her mouth. Her eyes dancing with a happy light. "That's why you'd not share the drink!"
Vanna Rae nodded without looking at her.
"Now is certainly a fitting time." I murmured.
"The return of the King of Alphas." I looked at Killian pointedly. "And the first time in recent recollection that mages and wolves have been allied."
Everyone began cheering and whooping behind us.
"Well said." Killian scooped around my waist. Whirling me as he grinned at me.
As if I were the most lovely thing he'd ever set eyes on.
The next day dawned with great promise.
We travelled the woods in pursuit of what remained of the NightHunters.
"What's your plan?" Fury asked.
"I want to destroy all of them." Killian said. "They've made war on their own kind. For that, I condemn them to return to us or die."
"Seems correct." Fury agreed. Walking next to him. "I will put word out to my sons."
Killian's head spun to him. "The guardians."
"Who better?" Fury remarked.
"No one!" Killian said in shock. "That's quite the reinforcements."
Fury smiled. "You don't even know how many there are."
"I've met Rampage." Killian nodded toward the younger man who was now walking next to Tanya, clearly trying to sweet talk her. While she tried to outpace him.
Clearly not possible with her far shorter legs.
"Aviari." Killian said. Summoning his tall, thin brother.
"Yes?"
"Would you send out Sentinels for me?"
"Of course. With what message?"
"That I'm coming for NightHunters. So if wolves want to live they need to abandon NightHunter packs and join the Gallions or other sound packs."
"And where do I deliver this message to?"
"Everywhere." Killian said with ominous blue eyes.
