Making my way to the mandap, I could feel the hole people were burning into the side of my head. My breathing caught slightly and I could feel myself totter, my knees weakening just as someone grabbed my hand.
"Are you okay?"

The voice, deep, husky and familiar. I nodded and squeezed his hand. I couldn't even remember getting to the mandap, let alone sitting down.

I kept my right hand in his left palm as the priest began reading out the mantra's. He then ushered for me to say my vows.

"I clasp your hand so that we may enter into the holy state of matrimony so that we may be blessed with prosperity and noble progeny, under the eyes of the All-mighty lord."

I didn't realise how nervous I was. My voice was shaky and there were tears flowing down my cheeks. I couldn't look him in the eye.

"My name's Rohan by the way."

Rohan? Rohan?...

"Sonya." I whispered back.

"Well... At least we can go for jogs together through New York" he chuckled and then it hit me.

"It's you? From this morning?"
I finally looked up at him and recognition and slight relief washed through me.
He smiled, a heart-stopper smile, and held my hand tightly as we were asked to stand and that's when we started taking our 7 rounds around the holy fire, our hands were clasped together and his suit scarf and my veil were tied together to symbolise our ever-lasting bond.

As the priest chanted out the mantra's I was going through what they meant, in my mind.

Round 1: may the first round lead to food which is pure and nourishing.

Round 2: may the second round lead to strength. (Physically, emotionally, spiritually and intellectually.)

Round 3: may the third round lead to prosperity.

Round 4: may the fourth. round lead to all round happiness.

Round 5: may the fifth round lead to progeny. (Happy and prosperous children.)

I snapped out of my reverie as I felt his grip tighten around mine for a moment and I looked up to see a slight smirk on his face. My cheeks were scorching red and I but my lip as I stared at our hands entwined together.

Round 6: may the sixth round lead to a long life for both of us and our marriage.

Round 7: on this seventh round may we now be bonded through matrimony and may we love, respect and care for each other.

We both stopped and sat down as he was given the wedding ring which he slipped on my finger and I with his. It was a perfect fit. Mine was a gold ring with a small diamond in the middle and diamonds surrounding it.

I then bowed my head for him to tie the manglasutra round my neck. Now we were both husband and wife.

That thought scared the hell outta me.

A detailed update...

Translations:

Mantra's = chanting of vows.

Manglasutra= marriage necklace to show that the girl is now married and that she will always love and care for her husband and now her husband is the only man in her life because this necklace symbolises that the soul's of the wife and husband are now bonded.
