Heidi Turner

Heidi stared at herself in the bathroom mirror. Amazing how skinny she had grown. And tall. She was one of the tallest kids in the eighth grade. Which suited her fine. Heidi didn't mind being different.

"Breakfast!" Mom called.

"Okay!" Heidi yelled back in return. She gave her hair three more brushes before wheeling out of the bathroom.

Monica, Heidi's three year old sister, was sitting on the floor. "Hi Monica. Hi Mom. Boy am I hungry"

"You could use some meat on your bones" Mom replied, not looking up from the kitchen stove. "You want a waffle? Scrambled eggs? Fruit salad? Cereal?"

"All of the above" Heidi  retorted nodding. "I'm starving"

"Morning Ladies!" Dad said, walking into the kitchen. He poured himself a cup of coffee and sat down at the table.

"HI Dad. Nice suit" Heidi waved her spoon and motioned over at her father.

"Thanks" he smiled at her "What's going on in school, Heidi? How's Mr. Garrison holding up?"

Heidi shrugged her shoulders and waved her head "Next week we're are starting a research project"

"On?..."

"My Future Profession" Heidi answered "Like, what we want to be when we grow up" Heidi explained.

"And you want to be a lawyer right?" her father glanced slightly with the corner of his eyes at Heidi's expression, which was pleasing "Like father, like daughter" her Dad chuckled.

"Nope" Heidi shook her head violently "I want to be the chief of justice of the supreme court"

"Nice!" he remarked and stuck out his lip proudly "But most supreme Court justices are judges first. And most judges are lawyers first" he answered, breaking her hopes and dreams in a way.

"You'd make a fine lawyer" Mom ruffled her hair and Heidi turned to comb her hair back to normal with her fingers. He placed some scrambled eggs onto her plate "You've got the mind for it"

"Yes, and law is important" Dad gestured with his fork and widened his foreman which is something he did often "Without law their out be chaos!"

Monica ran over and took the seat next to Heidi. "What are you going to be when you grow up?" Heidi asked the tiny girl sitting next to her.

"A horsey rider" Monica answered, dead serious "Can you teach me please?"

"I've got to go to school" Heidi told her.

"I thought today was a home day?" Monica kept fighting sadly.

"Nope, today it's Friday. Tomorrow's a home day"

"Here's your waffle" Mom said to Monica. Monica reached for her knife and fork which lay scattered on the table.

"Let me help you cut it" Heidi offered and reached across the table for the utensils.

"No! I Do it MYSELF!" Monica screamed. She stabbed her fork into the waffle, but it slid off the plate and knocked over her cup of orange juice, which in turn spilled all over Dad's suit.

"She can't do it herself!" Dad yelled standing up from the table quickly and trying to rub out the orange stain with a napkin but it just blended in more and made it worse "What were you thinking?!"

"Sorry Dad" Heidi shrunk down in her seat and looked down.

"Now I've got to change!" Dad stormed out of the kitchen, the stomping from the stairs, loudly noticeable.
