Things had gone pretty smoothly over the past week, all things considered, Lindsey thought, as he walked down the stairs on his way to the studio. Kristen and Lynn were taking the kids to the park for the afternoon, so that they could get some work done, and he was really looking forward to getting back to the music. He was working on one of Stevie's songs today, and he found himself grinning helplessly at the thought, but then immediately felt guilty.
"Lindsey, man....what is UP with you? You gotta stop this. You have a marriage." He said, under his breath, as he opened the studio door and almost fell over the object of his dilemma.
"Stevie!"
"Lindsey!"
They laughed, and Stevie bent over to pick up the papers that had flown out of her hands when the door had hit her. "Where's the fire?" She asked, an amused grin still playing about her lips.
"Umm....no fire," he chuckled. "Just running a little late, that's all."
Stevie sucked in her breath in feigned horror. "Nooo! NOT Lindsey Buckingham! Lindsey Buckingham is NEVER late!"
"Okay, smart ass.... And speaking of....where are you headed off to? Thought we were gonna work on that song of yours."
"Oh, we are. I was just going to run upstairs for a sec. I forgot some of my notes for the song." She had actually been headed up to see what was keeping him, but he didn't have to know that, she thought, as she absorbed the site of his blue eyes sparkling mischief at her. God, would his eyes ever cease to affect her?
"Ah, okay. Well, hurry back. I'm anxious to hear this. You got the demo ready? I'll just go ahead and listen while I'm waiting." He stepped out of the doorway, and into the room, allowing her to pass. She tossed another grin over her shoulder at him on her way out, and he wondered how the hell he was going to manage spending the next few months in the same house, under the same roof, with her.
He was supposed to be working on his marriage. Supposed to be over Stevie. SUPPOSED to be in love with his WIFE. He stood there for a few more moments, in a daze, almost. How the hell was he going to convince Kristen that he didn't have any feelings for Stevie, when lately he couldn't even seem to convince himself? What was he getting himself into? Walking over to the tape machine, he started the cassette, preparing to listen as his thoughts continued. He would have to be careful, or he'd end up hurting them all...
Startled out of his thoughts by the sound of Stevie's voice coming from the speakers, Lindsey sat back in the chair, automatically shifting his concentration, his mind churning already with the possibilities for the song. Without paying attention to the words at all, he listened to the simple melody she had written, and scooted to the edge of his chair, so great was his excitement. This was good!
He'd always had a knack for knowing what to do with her songs. It was almost effortless on his part, and he reveled in the knowledge. This was their game. Buckingham/Nicks. And they were back. He jumped out of his chair when Stevie walked back into the room, and turned off the tape. "That was fast. I didn't even get to finish listening, but I've already got a thousand ideas in my head," he told her in a rush, the words tumbling from his lips in his excitement.
"Lindsey," she gave a laugh that was part sigh, and then continued, "you didn't even listen to the words, did you?" Which was probably just as well, she thought. Oh, well...he would hear them soon enough. And then he would know.
A sheepish look crossing his face, Lindsey responded, "Nooo...sorry. But I promise I will this time! Come on...I'll start it over, and you can show me your notes, what you've got so far, and I'll show you my ideas." He really couldn't contain his exuberance, and Stevie's heart skipped a beat as she realized how genuinely eager he was to work on HER song. It had been SO long...
