Massachusetts- one month later

It was a lakehouse, not very big, but just the perfect size for one or two people. A mile or so of woods surrounded the lake and adjacent cabins until any sort of main road- the perfect place to go to get away from civilization.

The girl had been trying to get away for the past three weeks, which had not been easy. There were things she was required to do, and things she felt an obligation to do before finally escaping. But she saw an open door and she took it, finally driving four and a half hours out to her family's rented lakehome.

It was mostly quiet, save for the haunting ring of the violin music coming from the study. She bit her lip hard as she practiced, dragging the bow across the string in a new attempt to perfect this challenging solo. It was a habit, biting her lip, but it would happen even when she tried to break it.

The instrument was loud to her ears. It vibrated around the whole cabin and out the open window to the east, where a man stood listening.

Narrowing his eyes, he strode toward the cabin, pulling a bundle of wires out of his pocket as he did.

If the girl had stopped, even for a second, her keen and trained ears would have picked up the telltale click of the lock being turned from the outside.

She would have also heard the soft thump of footsteps trying to be concealed. But the prickling on the back of her neck and her fine-tuned intuition told her all she needed to know.

With a final flourish, she chose a suitable place to cut off her solo and slumped down, tired. Carefully, her fingers edged to the pocketknife on the desk.

The entrance floorboards to the study creaked when stepped on, she knew. And she waited.

Creak.

She whipped around on the revolving office chair and threw the pocketknife, pitching herself forward into a gymnastics roll on the floor just as a bullet whizzed over her head.

Another defeaning gunshot echoed throughout the whole cabin. It pelted up wood from the floorboards, because suddenly she wasn't on the floor but behind her attacker-

He picked the pocketknife out of his shoulder with a sickening squelch and turned slowly.

"Holy shit," the girl breathed. "You."

The man smiled and threw the knife down behind him. "You were expecting someone else?"

He caught her off-guard with a punch in the nose.

"No," she gasped, lifting her arms in a flash to block the next one. "Don't make me hurt you."

"Don't worry, kiddo," he smirked. "You don't have to."

He raised the gun again and shot her twice in the leg.

And he was gone.

The girl wasn't sure whether she had passed out or if he had actually disappeared, but when she opened her eyes on the ground he had simply disappeared. Hauling herself up to a sitting position, she rolled up her sweatpants and looked at the shots.

"Oh, crap," she muttered, seeing the mess her attacker had made of her leg. To put it simply, there was blood everywhere and one bullet had undoubtedly scraped bone.

It took a few minutes and a lot of pain before she finally pulled herself to the study, where her cell phone was. She found the fourth number on speed dial.

"What's wrong?" the voice said immediately.

"Dean," Mallory huffed. "Your brother just tried to kill me."

Annd here we are! Come to the end of the road at last. Well, sort of- I'm pretty sure I'm gonna write a sequel. I have been planning it for a while.
But yeah. Look at this. I started this nearly a year ago, and looking back on my first chapters- ooh! Cringe-worthy to the max. But I got better, and I finally finished catching up to the show (when I started this, I think I was on season 5?? whoa) and I know a lot more about the characters now.
So the next one might take a while, but hey, it's summer and overwhelmingly hot so there's lots of time to write. I just need title ideas though...
ALSO I have one last request. Please please please please PLEASE do me a favour (hey, you stuck with me this long, I must have done something right) and TELL ME what you thought of this! Please?
And I guess I should say thank you. This was long and I know it was (sorry! I was introduced to fanfic on a long one and I figured that was how long they were supposed to be!) but those of you who read it all the way through, thank you. So much.
Alright, see you all on the flip side, I guess.
