Jon entered 4th period and noticed Mariah deeply focused on doodling in her Gengar notebook. Intrigued, he approached her to see what she was working on. "Hello, Mariah," he greeted, making his presence known. She looked up and greeted him with a smile, "Hey, Jon! Look at this - I drew Elphaba and Glinda! Defying gravity together," she proudly showed him her drawing of the two characters on a magic carpet. "It's like an Aladdin twist... Elphaba as Aladdin, of course!" Mariah exclaimed with excitement. "That's fantastic, Mariah! You should definitely consider pursuing a career in art," Jon complimented, smiling warmly.
Mariah shook her head in disbelief. "You don't think so?" Jon asked, raising an eyebrow. "Well, I think it's just a hobby I enjoy," he replied. Mariah smiled warmly, "I love helping people. I want a career where I can make a difference in people's lives. I need a job that involves interacting with others because being alone is the worst." With a soft smile, Mariah shared her thoughts. Jon couldn't help but recall all the times he witnessed Mariah's selfless acts of kindness. That's how their friendship blossomed.
Jon looked back on the time when Alexander McPherson pushed him into a locker, and Mariah was the only one who showed concern for his well-being. As they reminisced about the incident, Robert Manion entered the room with his usual self-assured manner. "Hey Mariah, Jon," he greeted them, making eye contact. Mariah opted to ignore Robert, as their friendship had turned sour after an argument about her ex-boyfriend from freshman year. Robert had suddenly brought up the topic and began yelling at her, causing her to start ignoring him.
"Are you still upset about that?" Robert asked Mariah, his tone dripping with arrogance. However, both Mariah and Jon failed to detect his arrogance. "Of course I am! I never bring up your exes. Besides, I explicitly told you during our freshman year that I wanted to never talk about him again, especially when I was in a vulnerable state of mind. And yet, out of nowhere, you brought him up, fully aware of how it would affect me. It pushed me to the point where I considered going back to him, and you have the audacity to blame me for the breakup! It doesn't matter that it happened two weeks ago; it still hurts. I specifically asked you not to bring him up, and you disregarded my feelings. And don't belittle the significance of that relationship just because it was a messy breakup and I was only 14. It was my first relationship, and it meant a lot to me, even if I can see now that it wasn't as significant as I thought." Mariah's anger was palpable as she expressed her frustrations.
Robert had the audacity to laugh "fucking hell Mariah, you're so overdramatic." He said laughing, struggling to get his breath back from laughter "hey hey! Robert that's not nice.. Mariah has done nothing to you." Jon said in Mariah's defense "Sure... Anyways you want to hang out after school Jon?" Robert completely changed the subject as he usually did when the blame was shifted onto him.
Mariah scoffed, she grabbed all of her things shoving them into her backpack and she went to sit at another table, she huffed and put her head down on the desk, she quietly cried to herself.
"I guess I can, what would you like to do Robert?" Jon asks nicely, he looks at Mariah feeling sorry, but Robert was his best friend, Mariah was just a friend and Robert mattered more to him in his head "there's a arcade" Robert said wondering if he could think of something good to go to "I guess the arcade's cool." Jon said still feeling sorry for Mariah "you look distracted man?" Robert realized "oh! It's just- Mariah looks upset." Jon said worried, Robert looked at Mariah, smirking, laughing even.
"Why are you laughing?" Jon said in disbelief "she needs to suck it up. She broke my best friends heart." Robert said, which confused Jon, Robert said he only had one best friend and that it was him.
"I never knew Jackson was your best friend?" Jon said slightly nervous to ask the question, Robert always made him feel that way nervous to express his opinions or thoughts or even worried to disagree with him because he would always throw a fit.
