She walked hand in hand with Ron out of the Great Hall. When they were out of Draco's sight, Ron sat down on one of the benches outside the hall and motioned for Hermione to join him. "So Hermione," his voice cracked. "You know, the ball is coming up soon, and I was wondering if..." Out of the corner of her vision, she saw the pointed nose and striking hair of Draco Malfoy. When their eyes locked, he stopped dead in his tracks.
"Will you go to the ball with me?" Draco heard it, Hermione heard it, and everyone else in the corridor heard it. Ron was holding open a box with a rose in it, and he waited for her answer.
Draco's face distorted, and Hermione could feel sweat on her brow. "Ronald..." She began. "I..." She looked back at Draco and shook her head. Draco wouldn't take a mudblood to the ball, he wanted to go with that odd girl... Luna of course. Ever since Luna and Draco had been talking, there seemed to be a spark. He admired her oddness, and kept her down to earth. She kept his head up in the clouds, and he looked like he enjoyed her company.
Hermione faced Ron once again, his eyes filled with hope. The rose in the box was droopy on one side, and it seemed to be dying. With a shaky breath, Hermione gave him her answer...
