~Sean's biggest mistake?
Losing his eye.
Mine?
Helping him.
No sooner that I burst through the door, the three-pointed end of the trident is inches from my face. I knock it aside with my spear.
"What the fuck, Sean?"
He stepped back, letting me pass through. "I didn't know if it was you."
That's fair. He is wide-eyed, looking more alert than ever.
"I heard the fighting. Who was it?"
"The girl's brother." I said, my arm was starting to pound. "He doubled back on us. Wanted revenge. He must have been following us for some time, waiting for the perfect chance."
"I told you we shouldn't have split." He said.
"Yeah? Well, it's not like I had a choice. The entire building rearranged itself!" I kicked the broken lamp by my feet.
"Let's just get out of here."
I wanted to be out of the arena. It feels like I've been stuck here for weeks. How much longer do I have to endure? He accidentally brushes against my arm and I jerk back. I don't make a sound even though it hurts.
"You hurt?"
We walked into the street, I was starting to recognize our surroundings which meant we were getting closer to cornucopia.
"Yeah, he was beating me with a bloody pipe. I'm not sure if it's a fracture. I've never broken a bone before - I don't know what it feels like."
He stopped me gently, "I have. Let me see."
I don't want to. We've both sustained injuries now, but only I am at clear disadvantage. Sean doesn't need both eyes to aim but I need both arms to fight someone off. He pushes up the sleeve of my jacket, I wince when certain movements and prodding make my nerves light on fire.
"A bone doesn't need to poke through the skin for you to know it's a fracture. Where does it hurt?" His fingers skimmed my forearm.
"Right there." It's dead in the middle of my forearm. I don't know which bone it is, radius or ulna? Maybe both? At least my arm isn't snapped in half.
"It's gonna swell, your arm will be purple-"
We are still in the open, "Let's keep moving."
"Wait!" He said.
A parachute is making its way towards us. Our tributes have never lacked for sponsors yet it still amazes me how quickly our mentors sent in their gifts. Sean opens it, his facial expression drops.
"What?" I said.
He shows me an eyepatch, it has a note that reads: For One-eye. ~M.O.
"Real funny, Mairon." I said dryly. "Is that it?"
I hold my breath. It wouldn't surprise me if that was the only content of the parachute - especially if it's Mairon monitoring us on his own.
"No, we've got a brace. Some food and water. And some sort of vitamins."
It is a removal brace with a sling to support my arm. There's no way I can keep it on during a fight, but while we are alone and hiding it might as well be used. The vitamin bottle is for increasing calcium in the body. I've seen the way the capitol's medicine can save tributes from deadly injuries. Of course, they hog it to themselves and our districts get none of it.
