Things happen for a reason. Water freezes in the winter. April and summer months have the strongest winds. Things happen for a reason. That is the way for the Wind Mafia.
It is an open secret in Winnetka that those in the affluent have secrets. Those known and not spoken about and the ones that are just that: a secret. The second one is where the Kazehaya family falls. Where the late Karura Kazehaya was a nurse with selling some baked goods on the side out of their home, Rasa Kazehaya set up a front as an M.M.A. fighter and pays some people in the community to train kids when in reality he is the Head of Kampu aka Wind Mafia. Their house nicknamed Kazetani for the family's love of fans and little villages that Karura (admittedly Yashamaru and later Temari) put outside the house for the changing of the seasons.
Rasa is also no idiot. He made no secret from his kids what he does. That is why at the tender age of seven almost eight and Karura died at the wit of one of Rasa's enemies and an unwilling Gaara's hands Kankuro barely shed a tear. Him and Temari were being strong for their father who often closed himself off in grief his beloved's untimely death is going to be make his grief tenfold and Gaara who still tears thinking of his mom not coming home. The night he started blaming himself for the greatest loss of their family.
It did not help in two months with Karura gone, Gaara had gone exploring in some open field on their land. He came across an innocent child who was exploring the area and hurt as he thought he was a spy. Gaara tried to help the other kid but the other kid deemed him a danger. From that day on no kid - not even Kankuro and Temari - wanted to play with Gaara. Unlike the other kids, Temari and Kankuro often trained with their brother with it disguised as 'playing' with the youngest. Though they had the luxury of it only being two-to-three times a week.
Then at fourteen Rasa was hospitalized. Gaara expressed interest in taking over the empire. Kankuro and Gaara have the most similarities to their father, Gaara moreso, so to keep hush on the happenings the three just let word slip that Rasa was in a coma and he was going to make recovery. It had been mentioned that all three will be splitting the role as 'leader' yet behind closed doors it was their life-long trainer/bodyguard Baki, Kankuro and Temari being bodyguards to Gaara as he pulled the strings.
Things change when Kankuro's eighteenth birthday was just around the corner. Kankuro has just gotten a mission done. He's safe in his car when he looks at his phone multiple missed calls from Baki, Gaara, and Temari. He doesn't bother to call them opting to go for the latest voice mail he has from his sister. Her voice appears calm but he can hear the shakiness underneath as she says the words "Dad's gone."
Kankuro turns into a statue.
Things happen for a reason. That's a phrase that Kotoko has heard her whole life. It's one she has despised. Her parents die when she is ten. Leaving her and her brother, Chojuro, to raise their four-year-old sister, Kisa. At first people tried to locate any distant relatives the could have but the closest was an aunt and cousin on their mother's side that due to reasons unknown to them would not take in the three siblings. They have a cousin on their father's side who went into the system just a year prior with Alador and Oza trying their hardest to get custody of her, their cousin is only sixteen and bouncing around from foster home to foster home that it is not a good idea for her to even attempt guardianship.
At first they try to separate the siblings and Kotoko would demand to know where and how her siblings are, often sneaking out if need be. And very few families were taking in more than one child, even fewer wanting three or more. A year into the system Kotoko told Chojuro and Kisa that she will step back from them, she knows she's difficult, and that it'll be best if they get adopted if she steps aside. Or she was going to tell them, as she often snuck out to steal things that will keep them fed and happy, often starving herself. Aside from that, no one wants a fat child, especially if said fat child is not losing weight (because people do not seem to understand simple fucking genetics).
