Thought I should mention: each chapter is going to be associated with a song:
Chapter 1: Slipped Away by Avril Levine
Chapter 2: How Do I Say Goodbye? by Dean Lewis
Content Warning: death, drugs (weed is named harder drugs are allusioned to), grooming, non-consensual kissing
Kankuro wakes on his eighteenth birthday with dread. His father's funeral is today. Not that Kankuro had much planned for the day anyways. Figured he'd go to some of his favorite restaurants for his meals, go and visit Gaara at North Shore Country Day seeing as he does not get out until the fifth of June. Possibly visit Temari at Elmhurst with her track and field scholarship and her actuarial science major and dance education minor she's better on the campus than off it.
All those plans have gone down the shower drain. Instead, the three siblings are getting ready for the funeral procession for their father. Temari is wearing a full black bell-sleeve dress that one might wear to a church if in a different color. Kankuro and Gaara are wearing black and dark-grey (to the point the grey can be considered black) suits with navy blue handkerchiefs in their jacket pockets.
Kankuro considers Temari lucky as she resembles their mother more, nothing to inherit from their father. Gaara has his auburn hair, and Kankuro looks like an exact clone forgoing the fact that Kankuro's hair is the auburn their father's and Gaara's is and instead is a brown with red in it. If it is not considered bad luck, Kankuro would break the mirror he's looking at. Most of his father's associates have specifically called him Rasa non-stop since word got out that Rasa isn't around.
His hands grip the marble counter top of his bathroom sink.
A knock sounds on his bedroom door. He answers for the person to come in. Temari enters with her dress on, her hair falling above her collar bone. A small black hat on her head with a small veil falling in her eyes. She has her signature small fan in her hand, a small purse strapped around her waist. Kankuro leaves his bathroom. The two siblings make eye contact. Both having some grief. Not for their father, not for those who actually cared about their father. But for each other, for Baki and Gaara. The next few steps they are going to take after this day are going to be hell.
All three siblings enter the van that is taking them from the funeral home that held Rasa's services. They enter the very back, Gaara, Temari, then Kankuro. The windows are as black as possible so any weird photographers or amateur paparazzi can't get any good shots at them. All his life, Kankuro has never understood those people that go into photography or journalism only to become some weird glorified stalkers to get people either in their best or closely always to their absolute worst with the most absurd headlines. Questioning if someone has 'moved on' too quickly but not that of the other party if they are also seen with someone not too long after the announced break-up. If someone is actually grieving the loss of another person, if someone only used another for something they need only to get what they want and toss the other person.
In all honesty, Kankuro thinks that those who go on to be paparazzi are ones who are envious of those they snap pictures of and they are looking for something (perhaps some weird ass meet cute) and think in some unconscious level that this particular field will help them find the piece they're missing.
Gazing out the window Kankuro observes the people going on about their day. Some probably rolling their eyes and making rude comments about him and his siblings. Some being somewhat sympathetic to the grief he and his siblings are going through, but also think they might be making a show of it because of their wealth. Soon enough they are passing though some run-down buildings that are also being blocked off due to construction happening. He sees a small group of people. He takes notice of a girl, about his age. She's standing off to the side far enough that it can be fifty/fifty on whether or not she's with the group itself. He can only assume that without the tint in the window she possibly has chocolate brown hair that goes down to her waist, there is a rose in a stencil style on her left bicep, he can see something on her right arm but can't make out what it is, and two blue dots under her left eye. A guy around their age, a seeming few years older with golden hair and blue eyes steps away from the group gently putting his arms on the girl that is separated from the rest. Kankuro looks down, not wanting to witness anything romantic. Baring witness to something so joyous on a day filled with raging winds.
