Fallen

Summers day

The sun rays warmed my back as I sat on the beach, digging my feet into the sand and squishing it around my toes, the gravelly grains of sand sticking to my feet as I did so.
"How do you do that?! Ugh I hate the feeling of sand on my feet" My best friend, Mio complained, her face scrunching in disgust. I burst out laughing at her expression, only to gain a scowl, " I guess you can say that you just can't sand it " I smirked at my own reply.
She glared at me, " are u kidding?! This is not a time to be puny!"
I snickered, We've known each other since the first grade, we are at the point where we can hurl insults at each other as a joke.
" Heyy, are you worried about the shadows?" She asks quietly, the air becomes serious, almost as if gaining a weight.
Everyone knew about the shadows, but it's rarely talked about. It had become an unspeakable topic in this village. You ignore everything that happens and everyone that is taken.
Mio asks this every year, almost as if she wants reassurance, " it'll be okay, just like the other years." I take in a deep breath, breathing out slowly " it'll be over before you know it" I whisper back, I begin slowly falling back to lie down on the sand. I tuck my arms behind my head and stare up at the cloudless, clear sky.
A moment of silence spreads Over us. Each in deep thought.
" Do you think that they really eat peoples hearts?" I asked out loud breaking the silence.
I paused, waiting for Mio to reply. Nothing.
" Mio?" I sat up with the speed of lightning, looking towards the space my best friend sat at.
It was empty.

A small patch of disturbed sand was all that was left, I whirled around, trying to spot her around the beach, maybe she went home? I wondered to myself, or maybe.... No, I don't need to think like that. I scolded myself.
She probably went home or to that ice cream place.
I stood up, stopping to brush the sand off my pale blue shorts, bending down to grab my flip flops, I noticed a note, tucked under discreetly below my flip flops. " Sorry! - mio ".
Well that's just great, how did she even leave without me noticing? god, that girl is unpredictable.
I begin to walk towards the road, flip flops dangling from my hand, I tuck the note into my side pocket quickly. ow fuck! I mentally scream as I step on a rock barefoot. Pain instantly shooting up my leg.
Well this is just wonderful. I carry on slightly limping, looking both ways before crossing the road and heading towards the forest.
