Fuck. Y/n had caught the Lorax trying to talk to her husband. Now, she was more than pissed.

"WHAT RIGHT DO YOU THINK YOU HAVE TO TALK TO MY HUSBAND?! IF YOU'RE TRYING TO FIGHT OVER ME, GET THE FUCK AWAY FROM HIM."

The lorax scrambled to the woods, running from y/n's ruthless rampage. She was pissed. Her and the oncler were currently having a screaming match, all over the lorax himself. It made his heart flutter to hear the oncler defend him so passionately. The oncler was meant to be his and his alone. No stupid Y/N would get in the way!!!

The lorax was finally far enough that the voices had faded far into the distance. Far enough behind the ocean of trees that he could drown in the waves without a witness. Here, he could clear his mind and calm down. Y/N, the oncler, saving the trees—all of it was really getting to him.

"I've always fought for y/n," he thought aloud. "But was I really just jealous of her?"

The realization set in. Never once was the lorax fighting for y/n; he had always wanted the oncler. They were a cliche: enemies to lovers, but they could make it work. If he could just talk to the oncler...

Quiet footsteps approached behind him.

"Lorax," the oncler's quiet voice whispered.
"Oncler."

The two approached each other, stopping about two feet apart. They both knew what they needed to say, but the words were caught in their throats. It was as though speaking them out into the open would kill them before they could ever know what the other said.  They continued like this for several long minutes, staring at each other with a certain extent of shyness neither had known the other had.

The lorax was the first to speak up. The question had lingered on his mind for ages; always for the wrong reason.

"Do you really love y/n?"

The oncler hesitated. The answer 'yes' weighed heavily on his tongue, but alas he could not bring himself to speak the word. It was so simple, yet agonizing. He would be betraying himself, like always, to the truth he's always known.

The lorax's gaze softened. The words had gone unspoken, but he knew what the oncler wanted to say. Not what he was obligated to say.

The oncler turned away. "I shouldn't be out here. I don't know what I was thinking," he rambled as he began to walk away. The lorax reached for him, but ultimately, he knew it was better to let him go. The oncler was a married man, the lorax only had the trees he cared for to comfort him.

—————

The oncler returned home with a sullen expression. He was shaking. Either from the cold, or perhaps racking with emotion. Y/n couldn't tell. She looked at her husband sympathetically despite her anger.

He sat next to her on the couch, looking around at the home they'd made together. It was their own. Yet, the oncler felt as though a crucial piece was missing. He immediately thought of a bright orange hue—one he knew he would miss, now that he'd made his choice to go the simple way. There was nothing for him down any other path, except for maybe true happiness.

But as always, greed overcame him. With his business, with y/n, he could gain more money. The lorax would make him destroy the business he'd worked so hard to found, all for his love of trees. In the oncler's heart, money came before anyone. Money, money, money. It was a concept born of his greatest sin, yet it came long before him.

And it would ruin him and everything he knew. Y/n, the lorax, his business, his home, and his life.
