“What has this girl done now?” Amina asked as they walked into Jade's school.
“Are they in the main office?” Perrie asked and the school safety nodded.
“Why is she in cuffs?” Perrie asked confused by what she was seeing.
“I'm sorry mama.”
“For what? What did you do?”
“Ms. Edwards. I'm going to ask that you sit down and we talk about this.”
“Just tell me what's going on.” Perrie sighed she was not in the mood for this.
“Your daughter brought a gun to school.”
“No, she didn't.”
“I wouldn't lie about something like this, Perrie. I've held off on calling law enforcement because I know you and I know something like this can ruin her life. She told me she didn't have plans on doing anything.”
“What the fuck is wrong with you!? Do you know how much trouble you could get in?”
“Don't swear at her. It's not her fault.” Amina rubbed Perrie's back. She knew this was getting to be too much.
“I can't. I can't. Do what you have to do.”
“Mama please don't let them take me to jail. I'm so sorry. I just wanted to have protection. It's not real. It's a BB gun. It can't kill anyone. I just wanted them to stop bullying me.”
“Call your mother and tell her you've done. She will deal with you because if I do- Call Leigh-Anne.” She told the principal who she was pretty good friends with. She stood against the wall trying not to lose her shit.
Amina sighed when Leigh-Anne sent her to voicemail, again. Perrie called her and she picked up on the first ring.
“Leigh-Anne.”
“Yes? Are you still upset with me, Bubba?”
“Come get Jade”
“I'm busy”
“You're not busy. Listen. I'm really not in a good mood, so unless you want me to curse you the fuck out-” Jade watched Perrie closely, she's never heard her speak to Leigh-Anne so aggressively. She was positive that she was going back to the foster home if not jail.
“Stop swearing at me.”
“Then stop acting stupid and get your ass down here. Now. You got ten minutes.”
“I'm coming. Relax.” Perrie hung up and put her head in her hands. Where did she go wrong?
-
“Babe-”
“Don't touch me. Get away from me” she shoved Leigh-Anne when she tried to hug her.
“What's going on? Why are you acting like this?”
“Jade, what happened?” She asked when no one else responded.
“I brought my gun to school.”
“Why?” The principal found Leigh-Anne's calm demeanor quite alarming.
“Ma'am, your daughter brought a gun to school. You do realize that this is a crime and she can be arrested?”
“It's not real. That's obviously a BB gun.”
“Obviously not. It's still illegal and you should know that. Didn't you get arrested for taking a gun to school?” Amina asked and Leigh-Anne didn't say anything.
“Take her to Jail.” Perrie didn't care anymore. She tried. She did.
“No, mama, please. I won't do it again.” Perrie ignored her and walked out with Amina.
“You're not arresting my daughter.”
“She's such a fucking idiot sometimes!” Perrie broke down, not knowing what to do.
“I'll go get Jes. Take some time for yourself. Get away from home.”
“I can't!”
“You can. You need it, Perrie. You're going to drive yourself crazy. I feel so bad that she got you involved in this. It's my fault for not making her do something with her life.”
“It's her fault, Amina. No one ever blames her and she needs to be blamed. We're always blaming ourselves and we need to blame her. This is her fault. She told me she wanted to change and I made the stupid mistake of believing her. I'm this close Amina. This close. I swear if I didn't love your daughter so much I would've been left.
"I know."
