I opened one eye as I stared straight ahead of me. Last night began flooding back. Oh no. I suddenly pushed myself up, leaning on my arms as swished my head around, looking for Jack. Nothing. However, his side of the bed had been disturbed, so it was obvious he'd been sleeping there at some point of the night. I lightly jogged into the living room which was completely silent other than the rumble of the Omaha town. I searched around and even called Jack's name before I spotted a note on the kitchen counter. Ah, that must be from him I thought to myself. Perhaps it was a note to say sorry for how he ran off last night without giving me anytime to explain. I carefully picked up the ripped out page from a notebook and read it quickly.
Had to go to back home, thanks for letting share your bed last night
but damn you kick hard!

As I made my way through the words my smile full of hope faded into a from full of disappointment. Jack had been in no contact with me whatsoever. I quickly fumbled around for my phone as I speed dialled Jack. Straight to voicemail.I panicked a little, looking at the toast and glass of orange juice Aleena had made and left for me. She was a good friend. I charged around the apartment, almost pulling out my hair. I soon realised that if Jack wasn't here he must be at the cafe. After all, he did have a shift today. I smiled a little, reassuringly and decided to go and see him. I understood that he was mad, but he was gonna have to hear my side of the story first. I nodded to myself and determinedly patrolled into the bedroom getting after showering getting dressed into something cute and sweet and doing my makeup and hair all smart. I clamped my lips together, finishing off the light shade of lipstick I'd used and grabbed my small white clutch I'd been given for Christmas. I confidently sashayed across the street and walked down it knowing I looked and felt like a model. I then swung open the cafe door with a slight, but contained smirk planted on my face.
"Morning Regan." Imogen smiled up at me from behind the counter where she was sorting out cakes.
"Hey guys!" I waved at everyone, cheerily. "Jack's a bit mad at me so I'm here to explain." I nodded.
"Oh, uh- Re-" Imogen began."Jack." I called aloud, I knew he was hiding in the back somewhere. "I know you're pissed, but I'm here to explain that I've done nothing wrong, so you better come out."
By now everyone in the cafe was looking at me. Every staff member, every customer; everyone.
"Uhm... Regan..." Imogen came closer to me. "Jack's not here." She lowered her voice. My face dropped immediately. What was she on about?
"... What..? He-He has to be here...""We were just about to call you and ask if he was coming into work today, his shift should've started an hour ago."
"You.. You mean he's not here?" I asked, my voice cracking as I turned my head away.
"Why...? We assumed he'd be at your apartment." Imogen looked at me worried, placing her arm on mine. "Is there a problem?"
"No." I quickly shook my head, lying as I clamped my lips together to keep the tears in. "I'll see you later." I whispered and quickly vanished.
As I was walking home, I suddenly realised that this was more serious than I'd pretended it was. Jack was not at home, nor the cafe. He was not returning texts, nor calls. And frankly, no one had seen him in the past 17 hours. You could say that Jack was missing. I tugged at my hair, pulling it out of its stupid bun it was in. I ripped at my stupid necklace my Mom got me for my 16th and I scratched out my stupid dress that was itching the hell out of me.I eventually got home where I saw the landline flashing, this meant I had unopened voicemails. I headed over to it with some hope Jack might have tried to reach me. Maybe his mobile was dead and he was calling from a payphone or something. I saw I had 2 voicemails. One of them had to be Jack, surely? I listened to the first one.
"Hey honey, it's me. I was just wondering if-"
Mom's voice began through the machine. I immediately paused it, disappointedly and moved onto the next one.
"Regan? You should've been here an hour and a half ago! Are you sick or something? Ring me now and-"
I quickly deleted the message not bothered to hear the rest. I'd forgotten I had work today and even though it's not wise to not turn up to your work without an explanation, Marie was gonna have to understand that I had a very valid reason for not coming in today. Jack was missing.
