WAKING UP ON THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL WAS NOT SOMETHING BRYNN WANTED TO DO.

It was her first day of eighth grade at John Quincy Adams Middle School. Brynn and her stepbrother, Lucas, had been attending this school since last year when they moved to Greenwich Village from Texas.

Brynn and Lucas had made friends, but they both missed people from Texas. They actually both missed a certain person in particular.

But neither of them knew that the person they both missed was the same.

Walking into the school's doors, there was a new feeling that Brynn hadn't felt before.

She felt hope for the new year. This year was going to be the year that everything started to make sense, Brynn thought to herself as her and Lucas stumbled upon Riley, Maya, and Farkle.

The first thing that Brynn noticed about them wasn't their new clothes or their new haircuts, she noticed that Riley and Maya weren't wearing any shoes.

"You guys do know that everyone can see your feet right now, right?" She asked the two girls, who nodded their heads. "Her dad said we needed to walk through this world on our own two feet, so that's what we're doing!" Maya said confidently.

Brynn just stared blankly into Maya's eyes.

"I don't think walking around barefoot is what he meant."

The girls shrugged their shoulders, then Riley and Lucas locked eyes. They started to say hi to each other repeatedly. Like they always do.

"All summer." Maya sighed, and Brynn whispered something into Maya's ear that made her laugh. "You should've been there when Riley and Lucas walked around our backyard as a 'date.' It was bad."

Brynn and Maya both rolled their eyes when they didn't talk about the kiss on the subway. Lucas said they should, but they just went back to what they were doing before. "Glad we talked about it!" Riley cheered before going into their history classroom.

Farkle tried to do the 'Hey' thing that Lucas and Riley kept doing, but it didn't faze Maya and Brynn in the slightest.

When the kids walked into the room, it wasn't Cory Matthews standing in front of the room.

It was some random guy who seemed annoyed with Maya and Riley already.

Brynn sat in her seat behind Farkle, which was probably the best seat in the classroom. If she needed to take a peek at his test when she didn't understand it, she had a clear view because his head was so small.

The new teacher, Mr. Martinez, was just as Brynn had excepted.

An uptight man who didn't like little girls very much.

So maybe he was gay, Brynn thought.

The kids just acted like they would if Mr. Matthews was there. Farkle asked if he could have Farkle time, and Lucas didn't raise his hand before he spoke. Brynn didn't speak at all, which was normal for her.

The new teacher didn't like that. He didn't like it, so he quit. "Well, that was fast." Brynn muttered under her breath as he walked out the door.

Within a few seconds, Mr. Matthews walked in with all of his stuff.  He didn't seem pleased. "You did this!" He exclaimed, pointing directly at his daughter.

Brynn tried stifling her laugh, but lost it when Riley said, "I can't believe you're gonna be my father again!"

Everyone stared at her when she said that, so she had to say something else to fall back on. "I said what I said!"

Mr. Matthews just shook his head. "Seriously, Matthews, how is this happening?" Maya sighed loudly.

All of the other kids in the class shared about how they liked that Mr. Matthews had to come back due to Riley booping the other teacher on the nose. "The other guy wouldn't give me Farkle time." Farkle said, hanging his head sadly.

Lucas said that the new teacher didn't like when everyone talked, which Brynn agreed with to a certain level. "Well, he didn't like when we didn't raise our hands. He wanted us to talk but with manners."

"Yeah, but it was also like he wanted to talk all the time." Maya chatted to Brynn, who just shrugged her shoulders in response.

"I don't think that he knew that history class is supposed to be about our lives." Riley stated, which kind of left an impact on everyone in the room.

It even made Mr. Matthews start a lesson on Galileo.

Riley, of course, made the lesson about herself, because it wouldn't be a normal history class at John Quincy Adams Middle School without someone relating it to themselves!

Maya and Riley both wanted to get away from the shelter that was Mr. Matthews. Maya brought up the idea of transferring out of his class, but only her and Riley were up for it.

"I like the way he teaches us; I like how we're talking right now, and he doesn't stop us when he could if he wanted to." Lucas said, and Farkle and Brynn both nodded their heads.

"Yeah, why don't you stop them from time to time? Put them in their places?" Brynn said jokingly, earning a dirty look from Lucas and a chuckle from Mr. Matthews.

He gave the girls their transfer slips, and the fact that they weren't wearing shoes and still hadn't been became very adamant. So, Mr. Matthews opened his bag and threw their shoes at them one by one.

Once the girls were gone, Mr. Matthews pulled out a book called "Our Town." Well, Brynn called it a book, and Mr. Matthews corrected her and said it was a play, his favorite.

As he was starting to explain some of the history behind the play, Maya and Riley walked in again. "You're back?" Mr. Matthews asked as the girls sat down in their regular seats.

"As bad as this is, everything else is worse." Maya said blatantly, making Brynn and Lucas both widen their eyes and restrain themselves from saying something they'd regret.

Riley asked if they had missed anything, and Mr. Matthews said the lesson was just beginning.

"But you started the lesson like, five minutes ago." Brynn said, as confused as ever.

LATER THAT WEEK, THE OWNER OF THE BAKERY that the kids always go into had suddenly died. The celebration of her life was held at the bakery, and Riley gave an incredible speech.

It had something to do with gravity and the planets, but Brynn was so moved that she wasn't really processing the entire space part of it all.

There was a quote from Mr. Matthews' favorite play, Our Town, and it resonated with everybody, but especially Brynn.

"Just for a moment we're all together. Let's really look at one another."

Brynn had never really appreciated the people around her and the impact that everyone in Greenwich Village had been leaving on her. She loved it here, and in that moment, she didn't miss Texas.
