HISTORY WASN'T THE ONLY CLASS THAT EVERYONE ATTENDED, EVEN THOUGH THAT'S WHAT IT FELT LIKE SOMETIMES FOR BRYNN.
They had English class with one of the worst teachers in the world, Mr. Garaboski.
Brynn and Maya had been trying to make him quit since the first day of school, and they were certain that today was the day.
"Did we finally break him?" Brynn whispered, her face growing red as she stared at the door with anticipation.
Mr. Matthews walked in instead of Mr. Garaboski, and everyone knew the answer to Brynn's question. "You broke him!"
The class erupted into cheers, and Mr. Matthews explained why Mr. Garaboski wasn't there. "The guy survives Vietnam and Mrs. Garaboski, and he can't get past you. Now, he left a letter here that expressed his feelings."
Mr. Matthews held a piece of paper in his hands and started to read it. "Now you little..."
He couldn't finish the letter.
"He always talked about the good old days from 1985." Lucas sighed, reminiscing on their English teacher.
"Yeah, Garaboski probably loved it then because 1985 was the last year he could hit kids with rulers legally." Brynn scoffed.
Mr. Matthews kind of agreed with Brynn, but then said they needed a new English teacher.
Maya immediately waved her off, but as their new English teacher walked in, Maya became attentive.
She was a motorcycle rider and a punk rock chick.
Brynn knew this would be a fun rest of the year.
"You got a bike that goes with that?" Lucas asked the new teacher, Ms. Burgess, as he pointed at her helmet.
"1800 cc twin cam fat Bob fuel tank wide glide. What do you ride?" Ms. Burgess asked Lucas, and Brynn answered for him. "He's ridden Judy the Sheep a time or two!"
"62-pound quad hoof white fleece, kind you count before you fall asleep. Baa baa." Maya said, trying to match how the new teacher described her motorcycle.
Ms. Burgess asked Lucas if he wanted to race, and he said no very quickly.
The first thing that Ms. Burgess, or Harper, which she wanted to be called, was Frank Miller's 'The Dark Knight Returns.'
It was a comic book, which did not interest Brynn in the slightest. Brynn actually liked to read the long novels that teachers would give in the past, and she was hoping that they would get an actual book soon.
When Lucas and Brynn got home, they both walked into their rooms and shut the doors.
Lucas got started on his Batman homework right away. Brynn laid down on her bed and called Zay.
Brynn told Zay all about the new English teacher. "You would love her if you actually showed up to school once in a while."
She heard Zay's laugh on the other side of the phone, and it felt like she was right next to him.
She missed him, and she didn't even know if he was still in town or not. He could've shipped himself back to Texas by now.
"Zay? To be honest, it feels like I've been waiting on you for these last couple of weeks. And I never thought to ask you where you've been. So, um, where are you?" Brynn managed to say whilst laughing at how stupid she sounded.
