As I was watching television on the couch, I heard a knock on the door. The knock was so soft he thought he imagined it. The knock grew in intensity for the second time. I finally broke from my messy thoughts, slipped into my soft slippers, and walked toward the front door. I peeked out from the peephole and my heart stopped. There stood the kid he remembered from the pictures he sent Hermes. I was shaking against the door and my legs felt like spaghetti. I needed to open that door to find out if it was that kid. I heard something outside the door like he just spoke.
He said again "It's alright if I'm not wanted, it's not like my father ever wanted me..."
My heart broke right there, and I flung the door open. I embraced him in a hug and said "I do want you as someone I can help at least."
He was surprised that I hugged him so quickly, and he hugged me back for a moment. I broke the hug and said, "Come on in, and what's your name?"
"It's Kai. Like the ocean name Kai," he said.
My eyes went wide at that moment, I never thought someone else would have a name for an ocean as their name. I contemplated what to do next. As he walked in behind me and slipped his shoes off at the front door, I heard his stomach rumble.
"Hungry?" I said.
"Yes, it would be nice to have some food, what's your name by the way?" Kai said.
"Percy. Percy Jackson" I said.
"Wow, that's a pretty name. I heard of one from my father, it isn't you right...?" Kai said.
"Nope, definitely not the one your father mentioned Ocean Brain. Of course, it is the one your father mentioned." I laughed.
"Oh I see," Kai said.
As I went back to the kitchen to make him some pasta and meatballs, he sat down on the couch and turned on the TV to watch something. He seemed to be enjoying his choice as he was watching it with happiness. Something turned in my heart from watching him. I brushed the feeling off because it felt a bit weird. As the noodles were done cooking and the meatballs timer clicked, I grabbed two plates and put the delicious food down. I grabbed both plates and went into the living room and set them down on the coffee table.
I said, "Here grab your food."
"Thanks," Kai said.
We ate in silence for a while, watching the television with some kind of space show on it. It seemed interesting enough for him so I let it slip by.
He broke the silence saying "So what was your life like as a demigod?"
I didn't know what to say to that question. I was scared he was going to think of me as a pussy for abandoning Camp Half-Blood and rotting away in my apartment, but I composed myself to say, "It was whatever, it was fun at first but as time went on, it got boring and after we defeated Kronos, we kinda fell apart and haven't seen each other in some time."
"That must suck, not having anyone to be by. I feel you Percy, I haven't been wanted by a lot of people, and despite that, I try to stay strong." Kai said as I saw a tear slip from his eye.
That tear sliding down his freckled face reminded me of Luke on his final day on this Earth. I silently put my arm around him and wiped the tear away with my finger. "It's alright Kai, despite how socially silent I must seem to you, I still care for people," I said.
"We should go surfing tomorrow to lighten the mood," I said.
"That sounds like a fun plan!" Kai said.
His beautiful ice-blue eyes shined as he said this. I couldn't look at him at that moment because I blushed at the thought of spending time with this Luke duplicate. He was only 16 and seemed more chill than any guy he had been friends with to that point. "Let's get ready for bed, I will show you, your room. "I said.
"Alright sounds like a plan" he smirked, as he got up to follow me.
I blushed again and hoped he wouldn't see it. I genuinely haven't felt this happy in a while. Still, a thought struck at the back of my mind as this might not go on forever.
As I showed him the room, it was a green-colored room with a bed and some drawers. There was not much here and it was bare. He didn't seem to complain about the lack of decor in the bedroom. "Night Kai" I hummed to him as I walked back to my room. I heard him get up from the bed and felt his hand grab mine. He spun me around and said, "I'm kinda scared of the dark, could you keep the light on?"
"Sure Kai, I'll keep the hallway light on, now night," I said.
"Night Perseus," Kai said.
I started breathing heavily as my body started shaking. No one has called me that name before, not Annabeth, not Grover, not even Luke. It was the sweetest name to ever come across someone's lips and it kind of turned him on. He tried to brush the thought away as he walked back to his bedroom. He climbed into bed and put his sheets over him. He thought for a long while how this relationship between him and Kai was going to work. Would it be friendly jabs here and there, or was he going to make a move on him? No way, he thought to himself, I would never cross the line as he is only 16. I will just befriend him and help him train, spend time with him as a friend, and not think much about these feelings anymore. Besides, why would Kai, the happiest soul on this planet as he seemed, want to spend time with this disgusting, worthless piece of shit who cried himself to sleep every night. He cried again softly as he fell asleep, thinking about Kai and his future.
