"School sucks." Dan moaned. Henry laughed and brushed a piece of hair out of his eyes. "How many months left do we have?" Henry laughed.
"At least four. I know how you feel though." Henry sighed. "Boy, I wish we could just time travel! Unfortunately, that is not my power!" He threw himself backwards in exasperation. "Mine do my no good in school." He huffed. Dan chuckled to himself. Henry sat up straight. "You wanna laugh? What's your power? Is it some kind of super calculator?" Dan covered his mouth with his hand, in an effort to stifle his growing laughter. Henry mimicked strangling Dan, when Maggi walked in. She paused for a moment, seeing Henry's movement.
"I'm going to pretend I didn't see that." She shrugged and sat down next to them. She leaned against the back of the chair and sighed. "Tests are so hard. At least I'll be able to leave all of that behind next year!" She closed her eyes and sighed. Dan smiled. Adopting her into their friend group had been an interesting experience, to say the least. She was quite fun to be around, once she came out of her shell. He could tell. It hadn't been that long since they had formally met, but it seemed like forever. He had noticed that she seemed very interested in one of the cheerleaders, Kadence Loid. He had suspicions that Maggi was gay, but he never liked to dwell on it. He didn't like speculating about other's sexualities. They all come out on their own. Just takes a little time and trust. He nodded in agreement.
"Tests sure are extra bad this year. I guess they're just trying to get us ready for the next chapter of our lives, but still!" It was nice to just sit and rant about tests instead of other things. He felt like they were always talking about heavier subjects, or just tip-toeing around them. He knew that Maggi knew more than she was letting on, about many subjects, but he never wanted to pry. He knew that she also knew all about Henry's powers. Dan slumped in his chair. It was odd, dating a superhero when you're ordinary. No flair of magic to be found. He didn't know how people found out they had powers, but the way Henry described it was, one day, he didn't remember what age he was, he woke up flying and he didn't need his glasses anymore. He knew it probably varied on how it surfaced based on the power. For instance, fire was probably never getting burned, or being able to make a fire no matter how rainy it was camping! Dan sighed. When he sat up straight again, Henry and Maggi were in an engaging argument on what science was better : earth sciences or biology.
"....knows that electricity and weather are so much more interesting that just plants!"
"Not true! Botany is super interesting! So is the human mind, animals, microbes, genes! Earth sciences just study what anyone can see anywhere! You can't just look out the window and find a map of your genes!"
"Guys, please. We all know history is better than science." They both went off at that, making Dan laugh. He liked to add an unpopular opinion to an argument. It made things interesting. The bell rang out and the three groaned simultaneously. The all waved goodbye and went their separate ways.Dan met up with Henry at the door. As usual they had to fight their way out the doors, both from normal students and fangirls. Dan didn't like how many girls were obsessed with Henry just because he was a superhero. It made his blood boil, and he wasn't a typically jealous person. He grabbed Henry's arm and ran through the crowd to their car. Henry didn't pass his driving test three times, so they resolved that Dan would just drive them both everywhere. The car ride was oddly silent. He was about to ask Henry what was wrong when he started talking.
"I got an anonymous text after we and Maggi got done talking." His face was clearly pale. Dan smacked himself internally for not noticing.
"What did it say!?" His voice was worried. It showed how much he cared about Henry. He got out his phone and scrolled until he found it.
"Hello Exodus, or should I say Henry? We saw what happened to Captain Night, and we believe that the people of this town deserve better than your tyrannical reign. Captain Night was the first, but she won't be the last. We believe that the time of heroes has come to an end. It's our turn. Get ready to meet the end of everything you love. The villains are due." Dan was silent for many minutes before finally getting his mind back.
"We should try to trace the number when we get back to the house. We can find out if it was just a burner phone or if the new villain got too cocky." Dan sighed. "I thought you'd get an actual break from this when we captured Captain Night. But, I guess that's just not how it works..." Henry sighed.
"I don't want to do that again. It was awful. I hope this new villain doesn't have control of SPACE ITSELF!" He cried out. The battle with Sabrina had take a huge toll on Henry's mental health. He had began to tell Dan that it felt like that had become his only purpose. To do the same thing, in a loop. Over and over and over. Like a broken toy. Dan had felt terrible for him in those times. But, he had stayed and will stay.
"We will get through it, no matter what it is. Together." He took Henry's hand and kissed his knuckles. "You can do it. You can get them just like you did Captain Night." Henry nodded and smiled.
"You're right! I can do it. We'll do it together. Just like last time." They both smiled and continued home.Thank you for reading and I hope you enjoyed! I'm hoping to get the story to pick up and start to get good very soon! I honestly prefer writing from Maggi's pov, but it is necessary to have Dan here, too. Anyway, please continue to enjoy, if you are, and if you aren't, please tell me what you would like to see happen!
