they had all agreed to kill alecto - for now, since monsters couldn't fully die - with medusa's head. percy and annabeth went to do it while grover and matilda ventured off into the kitchen to eat the untouched food.

"so.. you and percy..." grover said, taking a ginormous bite of a burger. matilda furrowed her eyebrows. "what about us?" she responded, shoving a watermelon cube into her mouth.

grover gave her an 'are you kidding me stare' and her eyebrows raised. "oh. oh. oh no, he's my best friend. you know that. everyone knows that." she frantically shook her head. grover gave her a tight lipped smile.

"yeah. same way everyone knows you weren't scared downstairs." matilda rolled her eyes, eating another watermelon square. "okay i'll admit i was petrified, but not because i'm genuinely scared of medusa. you wouldn't get it."

he sighed, also indulging in a watermelon cube. "if you say so." shortly after, percy and annabeth came to the kitchen.

"c'mon, we took care of alecto. we have to figure out what to do with this head." matilda nodded, grabbing a strawberry and following percy and annabeth to the basement again, grover not far behind her.

as they all went downstairs, they went separate ways.  matilda went to study the statues and after a few minutes they all somehow gravitated toward grover at the same time.

they found him staring at a statue mindlessly.

"what is it?" annabeth said. the three migrated their way toward grover, seeing him with a sad look on his face as he stared at a statue. "uncle ferdinand." he said.
