She stared mindlessly at the empty abyss, but it stared back; with its dark, lifeless eyes. She felt a shiver run down her spine, dark thoughts surrounding her as she looked down. A deep hole almost as if it were never ending, she felt the urge to just fall, but she knew it wouldn't be a smart idea, yet the thought still stayed appealing. She searched for an answer, the pit in her stomach almost as deep as the abyss, she felt helpless, she wondered if the pit in her stomach would ever be filled, what could possibly even be the cause of this horrid feeling? As the sun set, she followed the trail home, lingering in the air as she walked through the woods was a soft smell of wildflowers. Entering her home, a feeling of comfort swallowed her, a golden light shining through the blinds as the sun set. But the thought of the abyss stayed in the back of her mind. She never really got out much, she simply stayed by her cabin in the middle of the woods, trees surrounding her. She sat on her couch; but she heard a knock at her door, it was Isabelle. She was the more social friend, but the only friend who put up with her. "Evelyn! Are you home?" Said the voice behind the door, Isabelle checked on her every day, she truly cared, yet Evelyn never saw that. She opened the door and searched the home: "I'm here, Isa." Evelyn's voice came from the living-room. "Evelyn, you can't keep hiding away here." A look of concern was etched on Isabelle's face. "Come on, let's go out; explore the woods like we did back in the day?". Evelyn thought back to that, her and Isabelle, the smell of the soft grass filled her mind, the peacefulness of the birds chirping and the sun glimmering through the trees. "Maybe tommorow, Isa. It's late." Evelyn said that, hoping for Isabelle to leave. She wanted to go out; but the feeling of tiredness swallowed her. "I'll make sure to come earlier then. See you tommorow, Evelyn." The night hit, the moon giving off a soft dim light as it shone through the windows, Evelyn was lying in bed, staring at the ceiling. She was drowning in an endless pit of thought, she couldn't sleep; the idea of simply falling into the pit and never returning haunted her mind. She thought maybe she'd be free of all her troubles and everything that ever hurt her, mentally or physically. She thought of what the world could be without pain, without the suffering one goes through every day to simply survive. Maybe the pit was the answer, who knows? She woke up the next day to a knock on her door. "I'm here Evelyn! Let's go out into the woods like we planned?" She got up groggily, not wanting to speak to Isabelle but she had agreed to something, she didn't want to back out at the last second. "Give me a moment, Isa." A few minutes passed and Evelyn opens the door, she walks outside with Isabelle. "Hey, Isa, I found an interesting pit, almost as if it were never ending... you maybe wanna check it out today? It's close enough." As Evelyn said this, her voice dripping with malicious intent. "Yeah, sure! I think I brought a flashlight, so that'd be perfect!" Isabelle said with a cheerful smile. As they walked to the pit and Isabelle threw the flashlight down, it simply continued; never ending, and nothing but the sound of the air flowing against the flashlight could be heard, Isabelle bent down looking into the endless void perceived as a pit. Evelyn had a gleeful smile painted on her face: "Goodbye, Isa." Isabelle looked behind her at Evelyn, with a confused expression, "What do you mean, Evelyn?" Her last words before something horrid, such a simple question for something so much more complicated. Evelyn pushed Isabelle into the pit, she stood there watching as Isabelle disappeared into the void. The only sound you could hear was the wind gushing against Isabelle's body as it swallowed her whole. Evelyn stared at the darkness for what seemed like a few minutes in her eyes, but in reality; it had been hours, she got lost inside the abyss almost as if it called her name from out the darkness, it spoke to her in a way it seemed only she could understand. As the sun set, Evelyn walked home, following the trail back to her lonely cabin. She sat on the living room chair, staring at the off-white wall as a fly landed in the middle. It seemed so out of place yet so right at the same time, like Isabelle, Evelyn loved her company, but she knew the abyss wanted her, it called for Isabelle's name. The way it spoke to Evelyn, simply whispering into her ear, continuously telling her to give in and hand her into the dark void that is the pit. She finally gave in.
