Tessa: Can I come in?
He nodded once and opened the door just enough for me to come in. There was a breeze in the room and saw a window open.
He walked over and sat down on the built-in bench surrounding the window and he raised his knees up. He stared out the window but didn't say a word to me. I sat across the drumming of the rain creating a calming rhythm.
Tessa: Are you okay?
His eyes narrowed before speaking.
Hardin: I'm fine.
And turned back toward the window.
Tessa: Don't you want me to take that internship for some reason? You offered to help me before.
Hardin: That's just it Tessa, I want to be the one to help you, not him.
Tessa: Why? It's not a competition, and you were the one who offered first, so thank you.
I tried to ease his stress even though I didn't understand why it mattered.
He sighed and hugged his knees.
Silence hung between us as we both stared out the window. The wind picked up.
Tessa: I think I should go.
Hardin: You leaving? Don't go.
Tessa: Hardin, it's getting late and the storm is getting worse.
Hardin: You're maddening, absolutely maddening.
Tessa: How?
Hardin: I try to tell you that I... That I want to help you and I hold your hand but that doesn't do anything. You still don't get it. I don't know what else to do.
He placed his face in his hands.
Tessa: I don't get what?
Hardin: That I want you. More than I have ever wanted anyone or anything in my entire life.
He looked away from me.
That hit me hard, pretty much.
He wanted me more than anything.
That's what he said.
But, of course, I'm an overthinker and I overanalyse everything.
He couldn't mean that he wants me like I want him because he doesn't date, and I'm not being his plaything, even though he had been a couple of times so maybe he meant that he wants me for his beneficial needs and that was not what I was doing at all.
My mother would kill me.
He leaned into me, sneaked his arm around my back and guided me down so my back was flat on the cushioned bench.
As our lips brushed together, he gently pulled away, buried his head in my neck, and planted a small kiss there and then he slowly brought his lips back up. He kissed the corner of my mouth, then my jaw before his lips brushed over mine once more and he ran his tongue over my bottom lip before closing his lips around mine and opening them again.
This kiss was gentle and slow as he lapped his tongue around mine. One of his hands rested on my hip and fisted around the tank top. The other hand caressed my cheek as he kissed me.
Hardin's lips smashed onto mine and my hands travelled up his back. His narrowed hips ground down on mine and whimper escaped my lips.
He swallowed my gasp as his lips traced mine, movement for movement.
Hardin: Oh, Tessa. The things you do to me. The way you make me feel.
His hand travelled down from my cheek, to my chest, and down my stomach.
