Imade,” he began, his voice a delicate tremor, “I must confess—I am not accustomed to such candid conversations during Sunday service.”
She nodded, her skin radiant in the filtered sunlight. “Nor am I,” she admitted. “But your words—they stirred something within me.”
He chuckled, a soft rumble that seemed to resonate with the ancient stones. “Ah, curiosity,” he said.
Imade shifted, her fingers twisting the hem of her skirt. “Reverend,” she said, “you’ve guided souls for years. Do you ever doubt? Question your own faith?”
His gaze held hers, unwavering. “Doubt,” he confessed, “is my silent companion, it is the sculptor shaping my beliefs.”
She tilted her head, studying the lines etched on his face—the laughter lines, the furrowed brow. “And what about love Reverend?” she asked. “Is that a sin too?”
His eyes widened, as if her question had caught him off guard.
Reverend Alexander’s breath caught. “Call me Alexander,” he said, the words slipping out like a confession. All of a sudden, rain started to pour, Imade gasped softly, unknowingly changing the conversation, Alexander thanked God for the interruption before the conversation could get intense. He wasn't sure why he thought so.
As the rain intensified, blurring the world beyond the window, he turned to her. “Imade,” he said, “do you have a ride home?”
She shook her head. “No,” she replied. “I haven’t bought a car yet.”
His smile was a soft curve, a shelter against the storm. “Then,” he said, “consider me your temporary chauffeur. Where do you live?” He said as they stepped out of the church.
Alexander held the umbrella steady, its curved handle fitting perfectly in his palm. He stole glances at Imade—her eyes alight with curiosity, her lips slightly parted before handing the umbrella to her.
The heavy patter of raindrops on the umbrella created a cocoon around them.
As they reached his car, Alexander opened the door for her, and she slid inside. The leather seats welcomed her, and he settled into the driver’s seat, wiping raindrops from his brow.
