Imade’s eyes widened, surprised by the Reverend’s kindness. She had expected a polite inquiry about her well-being, perhaps a suggestion to rest. But this—this was unexpected.
“Reverend Alexander,” she stammered, “you don’t have to do that. I can manage.”
He smiled, a warmth in his eyes that reached beyond the fatigue. “Nonsense,” he said. “It’s the least I can do.
He motioned toward the exit, and they stepped outside into the crisp morning air. The sun was rising, casting a golden hue over the churchyard.
He started the engine, glancing at her. “Your dedication,” he said. “Its noticeable how tirelessly you work, at the hospital. It’s admirable.”
Imade shifted uncomfortably. “I just do what needs to be done.”
“But at what cost?” His voice was gentle. “You can’t pour from an empty cup, Imade. You need rest, too.”
She looked out the window, watching the familiar streets blur past. “I’m used to it,” she admitted. “The nights, the emergencies. It’s part of the job.”
“But you’re more than your job,” he said. “And you deserve more.”Imade’s heart fluttered. She had never expected such concern from a man of faith.
“Imade,” he said, “promise me you’ll take care of yourself.” She met his gaze, seeing the depth of his concern. “I promise.”
He smiled, and it was a balm for her weary soul. “Good.”
As she stepped out of the car, she turned back. “Reverend, I mean Alex,” she said, “if you’re free later, you can come over. I’m making some good food. We can hang out.”
His surprise was evident. “Me? Hang out?”
“Why not?” she said. “We all need a break sometime
He studied her, as if assessing the sincerity of her invitation. “Imade,” he said softly, “I appreciate the offer. Truly. But I’m not sure if—”Imade’s cheeks flushed, and she looked away, and she wondered if she’d been too forward.
"Uh, Thank you for the ride" she said rushing into her apartment feeling embarrassed.Imade’s cheeks still burned from her bold invitation. She had never been one to initiate social interactions, especially not with a man of the cloth. But something about Reverend Alexander’s concern had stirred a longing within her—a desire for companionship.
