"I miss one day, and you guys see the most action since we fought Cobra and Bane," Wally complained. He spun his chair around as the bioship made its way from Happy Harbor to Amity Park. "How are all of you able to miss so much school anyways? My mom will kill me if hero-ing gets in the way of my schooling."
"Sounds like you aren't doing too well in school then," Artemis said, smirking at the redheaded speedster. She'd arrived to join the team just this morning, introduced as Green Arrow's niece and new protege. Wally had butted heads with her immediately.
"I'm on the honor roll actually," Wally shot back. "Do you even go to school?"
Artemis crossed her arms, eyes narrowing. "Of course I go to school. I'm sixteen."
"There will be enough time to get to know each other later," Aqualad said. "For now, we continue the mission at hand. Danny and his friends have made it clear we are no longer welcome, but we are going to try and recover any chances of allying with them that we can. We'll also be continuing to gather information."
"Whoa, what'd you all do?" Artemis chuckled. Robin shot her a look, and the green-themed archer held her hand up in a mocking surrender. "Just curious."
"There were some," Aqualad's eyes flicked to Connor then back to Artemis, "things said that should not have been that provoked a hostile reaction."
"Regardless," Robin said, "we can still try talking to the Fentons while Danny isn't home. Since they just attended that Metropolis conference, it shouldn't be too surprising for them if a few heroes poke around some for more info."
"Arriving in Amity Park now," M'Gann said. "And I think we should just ask Danny. Maybe Robin or Artemis could talk to him, since they haven't directly interacted yet."
"Perhaps..." Aqualad mused. "M'Gann, you seemed to connect ok with Danny. Could you try talking to him after school?"
M'Gann nodded.
"Think he'll show today?" Tucker asked, glancing at Danny and Sam.
Danny shrugged. "If he actually wants to say sorry, then he might. If not..." He didn't voice how much it would bother him. He didn't have to.
"He did seem genuine," Sam said. "I think he'll be here."
She stopped by her locker, the boys stopping behind her. After Sam grabbed her books, they moved to Tucker's locker then Danny's. Armed with their first period books, the three stood as out of the way as they could. They talked about trivial things, normal things, until the bell rang, warning them of the impending start to classes.
"See you after science," Danny said as he split off from the other two. They waved each other off.
Danny found his usual spot at the back of the science classroom, setting his backpack down and pulling out his notebook and pencil.
Dash sat in the seat next to Danny. "Ready for the new lab assignments, partner?"
Danny sighed. After everything else over the weekend, he'd forgotten about Dash's string-pulling to pair them together for science.
The bell rang, and Ms. Tesna started to call roll. Connor was nowhere to be seen, and Danny resigned himself to having once again been played by someone he wanted to trust.
After finishing roll, Ms. Tesna started reassigning lab partners, shuffling the seating arrangement around as she went. Kids picked up their things and shifted seats without saying anything. Any other class would've had them complaining about a seating chart change, but they switched every month in this class. Plus, the one time they'd complained had them all doing double homework, so no one dared to say a word now.
