"Guys! " Danny's voice cut through Sam's and Tucker's concentration, and Sam stumbled in her recitation of pleasantries. The teacher glanced towards them, but Sam quickly continued until he looked away.
"Danny! " Sam mentally scolded the boy across the hall. "You know you can't just do that. Popping into our heads without warning like that is freaky."
"I know, I know. Later, ok? There's a possible Code Green! "
That got both of their attention. Tucker even shifted to sit up straighter in his desk. "Who? "
"New guy in my class. Connor Kent. There's something about him. And he's... listening."
Sam sighed. "Danny..."
"No, Sam, he's listening like me, and, depending on who sent him here, I'm not sure how he'll react to how much he won't hear."
"Alright. Meet us behind the bleachers in five. No Phantom." Sam turned from Tucker and raised her hand. "I need to use the bathroom."
"I'm detecting a secondary mental link," Miss Martian said, the rest of the team turning to look at her. "Someone else in the school is a telepath."
"Do you think it could be Danny?" Aqualad asked. "We don't know what his meta ability is so we should proceed with caution."
Miss Martian focused for a second but shook her head. "I'm not sure. Whoever was using the link already shut it down."
"Superboy," Aqualad said, "be cautious. Someone in the school is able to establish telepathic links like Miss Martian's."
"Got it," Superboy said. "He's asking to go to the bathroom now. One of you will have to keep an eye on him till he comes back."
Danny dropped under the bleachers, looking at where Tucker was perched on top of one of the cross bars with Sam leaning against the post next to it.
"So," Sam crossed her arms and resettled her position as she watched Danny glance around, "what makes you think this Connor guy is like you?"
"Besides the fact that you said he was listening," Tucker added, waving his PDA as he spoke. He froze mid-wave. "Wait, can he hear us right now? How good is your hearing exactly? We never really tested it."
"I mean, my hearing is pretty strong, but if his is like mine then we're far enough. All the school chatter should help blend us out anyways." Danny pulled himself onto the cross bar across from Tucker, legs swinging anxiously. "And you'll understand whenever you see him. I'm not sure, but Plasmius might be up to his old tricks again. It isn't quite the same, but there is that kind of vibe."
"You think he actually managed a stable clone?" Sam leaned forward, eyes serious. "He hasn't even tried since Danielle, and we've been keeping a close eye on him."
"Yeah, man, I haven't seen anything in his computers about new experiments or clones or anything," Tucker said. "And I did a personal check just a couple days ago."
"I'm not sure," Danny admitted. "He doesn't really seem like Plasmius' style. His name isn't even a variant of mine. What if this is some new ploy from the GIW?"
"You think they're into cloning now?" Tucker didn't sound convinced.
Sam shrugged. "They seem into anything they can weaponize. We'll just have to keep an eye on the new kid until we figure out what's up." She checked the time on her phone. "We need to get back. No way Mr. Martin will believe we've both been in the bathroom for this long. You should get back to class too, Danny. Maybe give Huntress a heads up so she can keep an eye out too."
