Chapter 9: Scary Night

Wednesday afternoon came way too fast for Bella. Jessica and Angela try on dresses, while Bella who has Alice's Adventures in Wonderland lying on her lap. But it has a piece of paper sticking out with the 'Thunderbird and Whale Book Store' bookmark showing. 

Jessica flounces out of the changing room, posing slightly provocatively in Bella's opinion in front of the mirror. It was a tight black halter-top dress that stopped just above the knee. "I think this halter makes my boobs look big." Jessica said, turning to look at Bella. "What do you think, Bella?" she asked. Bella looked at Jessica like a deer in headlights. 

Outside the window, a group of rowdy frat boys was headed towards a bar. When two of them look at the dress shop window catcalling and staring at Jessica in her low-cut dress. 

Jessica turned her back from the window and rushed to the changing room in embarrassment. "What do you think Bella?" she asked again through the curtain.

 Angela came out with a bright blue halter dress. "It looks great," Bella told Jessica while shifting around. 

Jessica popped her head out of the curtain, "You said that about the last five dresses." she pouted out. 

Bella winces at being called out, "You're not very good at this, are you?" Angela said empathetic towards Bella. 

"Sorry, we normally just allowed our Mom to pick out the dresses and we tried it on." Bella explained. Bella looked towards the window, "I wanted to go check out a bookstore that is near us." she paused and looked towards, Angela and Jessica, who had a new dress on. "Can I meet you at the restaurant later?" she asked them.

"You sure?" Angela asked Bella in worried. "Yeah. It can't be too bad outside Phoenix." Bella told her confidently, before walking out of the store.

Bella exits the bookshop and holds a brown paper bag. She heads down the sidewalk, but then hears footsteps behind her. Remember what she was taught when she and Anastasia signed up in self-defense that their school was doing. 

She doesn't turn around, and slowly pulls her purse towards her chest and opens up her purse. Pulling out the mice. She enters a fork in the parking lot, hitting the light-up section, the footsteps get closer...and closer, until she reaches a dead end. Isolated, Bella turned around, her breath was chappy when two boys exited from the shadow.

"Wanna beer?" one of the frat boys slurred, holding out a bottle towards her. 

Holding her breath, she unlocked the pepper spray, as the two guys cornered. Taking a defensive stance, she drops her stopping bay and wraps the straps around her wrist. The frat boys laugh at her. But when one frat boy comes too close to her, she swings her purse and hits him in the groin. Alice in Adventures was a thick enough book, that it made him double over. The other one stopped laughing and rushed towards her. Bella pulls up her left hand and spray the pepper spray on his face. He groans and falls to the ground.

Two other frat boys suddenly appear made. Bella started to hyperventilate, seeing two more coming towards her and the guy she hit in the groin starting to get up from his feet. Bella is back at a corner. When bright lights appeared in the parking lot.

Holding out a hand to cover her eyes. A silver Volvo screeches up, over to them. The frat boys dive out of the way, and the passenger side door opens. Bella stood there stunned seeing Edward at the driver's side. "Get in." he demeaned. 

Bella takes a few breaths, looks around, and sees the frat boys getting back on their feet. Bella quickly grabs her book bag and rushes inside the car. The moment she closes the door, one of the frat boys jumps on the hood of the car. Edward doesn't even flinch when he smacks the hood. Edward backs away in a high speed, before screeching to a halt.
