Another agonizing car ride with Josh in the drivers seat. Tyler thought it was finally over, all of the bumbling thoughts he had while in the car. Josh drove down main street in their beloved hometown, Columbus Ohio. Passing stores and event centers. The street lamps flooded the road like a calm river, light filling up every corner of the car as they drove under them. The cool air felt nice on Tyler's skin, his window cracked a bit for some sort of relief. But what happened during the interview. It just confused him. He couldn't tell if he was mad or proud at how Josh approached the situation. He shook his head and sighed, turning to Josh.
"Why'd you do that?" He asked, scanning Josh's side profile.
Josh's hands gripped the wheel like they had the night before. He shrugged "I don't know, Tyler." He replied bluntly, refusing to take his gaze off of the road.
Tyler crossed his arms, sinking in his seat. "I'm not angry, I don't think. It just caught me off guard."
"You don't think you're angry?" Josh scoffed, his knuckles turning white on the wheel.
Tyler turned his focus away from Josh "I'm not entirely sure, Josh." He spat through gritted teeth.
"Oh whatever, Tyler." Josh replied, taking up the same tone. "Y'know what? You can get out of my car now." He pulled over on the main street of Columbus, not looking at Tyler.
Tyler's palms immediately began to sweat, some sort of cold flash ran through his body at Josh's words. "W-what? No no Josh, please don't.."
Unlocking the doors, Josh turned his attention to Tyler. "Don't what?" His brow furrowed.
"I- Why are you doing this?" Tyler's eyebrows knitting together in confusion, "Please, let's talk about this when we get back to the hotel..?"
Josh locked the doors again, grunting in frustration as he quickly pulled out of the parking spot. He drove in a reckless manner, taking his anger out on the poor gas pedal under his foot. As they pulled up to the hotel he got out quickly, slamming his door. Tyler took a deep breath to collect himself before getting out and following Josh slowly to the room. As they got inside, Josh sat on the bed opposite to the one they had shared the night before. Tyler, although hesitant, sat next to him.
"Josh. Please, listen to me.." He placed a gentle hand on Josh's knee.
Josh looked at the hand on him and up at Tyler "Go on." He said plainly.
"You have to understand where I'm coming from. I didn't expect that you'd say something like that. On a live interview with thousands, maybe even MILLIONS of people watching. I didn't think you'd just say that. It was out of nowhere. I'm not mad, just a bit confused."
Josh got up, walking around a bit trying to consider Tyler's words. In Josh's mind it just seemed like Tyler didn't want anyone to know. It felt like Tyler was keen on keeping it a secret. Maybe Tyler was ashamed. Maybe that's the reason he never openly wrote a song about Josh.. He glared at Tyler, his face red with frustration. "You just don't want anyone to know, that's what this is. You're ashamed of me."
Tyler got up quickly, walking over to Josh, "No.. not at all my love that's not even close." He reached a hand to cup Josh's face.
Against his own will, Josh leaned into Tyler's touch before stepping back, letting the doubt consume him again. "I can't do this right now. I really can't." He grabbed his keys and quickly walked out of the hotel room. Once he left the lobby he got into his car, quickly starting it and pulling away.
Tyler tried to run after him, but it was no use. He sighed, returning to the room. He got on his phone, dialing Josh.
Across the room, a familiar buzzing chimed. Josh's phone. He left it in the room, on purpose. Tyler couldn't help but curl up in a ball on his bed under his covers. He shook with pure sadness, waves of pain washing over him like a tidal wave.
Meanwhile, Josh sped through the streets of Columbus, trying to find something. Really anything at this point to get his mind off of Tyler. He ran a red light, once again recklessly driving. His jaw clenched and his hands gripping the wheel tightly, he closed his eyes...
