An old but young doctor

Something I noticed about Ava is, she didn't love me like I loved her. She had so many friends at school she liked over me. To this day, I still wonder why she hung on to me. All her friends were 'cool' and matched her ambience more than I could ever.. The first time I met Ava.. I was a new kid, since I was homeschooled for 3 years, the idea of a school startled me. The entire reason my parents wanted me to join a school was because I didn't have any friends staying at home all day. This affected my communication skills. I couldn't express my feelings even the slightest bit. If I felt sad, I just wouldn't utter a word. When I was happy, I would just smile a lot. And when I was angry, I would give the silent treatment. When I was 6, this became a problem, My parents would try to talk to me when I was sad, but I would completely shut them down. So I joined school the same year.

I got introduced and sat down in the front chair, I closed my ears because of how deafening the class was. It felt like the teacher didn't exist. Some guy from the back of the class threw a paper ball at the teacher, before it could hit her head, she surely caught it and threw it back.. Then, instead of scolding, she brushed it off like it was nothing. It looked like she experienced it a lot. I heard muffled noises of yelling. Ava was yelling at the guy for messing her homework up, he pushed her to the ground, she stood her ground and slapped him. The guy's name was Arden, my brother, he was 2 years elder, but we studied in the same grade because he failed multiple times. Unlike my entire family, He was so extroverted. It was overwhelming hanging out with him. But, Ava and Arden got in good terms after Ava befriended me.

Part of me thinks Ava befriended me because I was Arden's sister. Whatever it is, Arden always stayed with me when Ava wasn't there. I only need those 2 people to survive school after all. As years passed by in that school, and after Ava's death, I learnt to survive alone, Soon enough, Lia came into my life, she saved me from my horrible thoughts. She went through a similar experience like mine, only her father was the one who died. She always loved her dad more than her mom, her mom was abusive.. She comes to school with full sleeved shirts to hide the scars. The only person she ever showed the scars was to me. The trust between us is so strong. She had another best friend called Liam, I got closer to Liam too, we 3 usually hang out together in lunch breaks.

I reached. I ran towards her house, her house was awfully huge. Every single bit of her house was so grand. Her room is gold with huge frames hung on those light wallpapered walls. The details on every every single bit of those walls petrified me. Reminded me of when I was a naive 18 year old citizen. Getting fooled into thinking I'll get what they offered for free. Little did I know free things don't exist. Their either sold for a higher price, or just aren't.

She quickly opened the door after I rang the doorbell, a tall figure with pink pajamas towered over me, she looked almost, afraid? Her face is very different from her actions, that's why it is so hard to read her. I called Liam who lived right next to her. We all ran up her huge stairs, it's an entire workout to climb those.

"Tell us what you needed to say Mel, I really can't wait no  longer." Lia spluttered out.

"She died."

I didn't know a better way to say this.

We spend a while over thinking this, trying to think outside the box, but maybe it was inside? maybe there's no reason to climb over the box.

"Listen Mel, You're good at things like this.. Why cant you investigate? You didn't even start investigating and you have so many doubts.. Impressive."

"She's right, you can be famous for this Mel.."

Everything that came out of his mouth had to do something with fame. He was so fame obsessed it annoyed me, but he's Liam. My so called 'best friend'.

"You guys are correct, I'll start with this quick and lets see where it takes us.."

"You want our help?" Asked Lia

"Well, are you willing to?"

"It would be fun and all.. But I'm not built for these kinds of investigation. You have all the reason to do so.. You saved her."

"For a day." Whispered Liam.

"You said something Liam?" I asked knowing what he just said, its hard to be chill when you are friends with people like Liam. Their there to ruin every single good moment you have. Once you get somewhere, its there instinct to snatch it right away from your hand. And well, you are expected to forgive and forget. I can forgive, I just don't forget.

"No." He said silently.

The next 30 seconds of silence was awkward, Lia had to break it.

"Well, we won't pull you behind.. Go ahead Mel, do what you came onto this earth for.."

"Thankyou Lia, your support means a lot to me."

I tried to shade Liam here. He gave me a look that proved he knew it, he got the message.

I left to drive home, It got late, The sun almost set, some birds waited, some flew away, and well others, stood still. Watched the sun before it leaves. The doctor who assisted Sofie was leaving today night. I have no time to waste, Aster is obviously my next destination. I texted my brother and mom that I would be late, i lied to them that I would be in Lia's house. I'm not fond of lying, especially to my family..

Aster hospital was the largest in our state, a silly mistake could be easily avoided, someone was either careless, or careless. It was tall, 38 meter tall, 15 floors, rooms were big enough to fit 3 patients. The huge tower hospital stood in front of me. I entered.

"Hey sir, its nice to see you again.. Aren't you changing shifts?" I asked to the receptionist I met earlier..

"Nice too see you again too.. Well, I took a few days leave, had to get something off my chest, so here I am, working days and nights. I owe the hospital I guess."

"I see, A doctor resigned, am I right?"

"Yes. He's inside packing up to leave."

"Okay, can I meet him?"

"Yes, you just have to wait here." He said pointing to the silver rusting chairs.

My fate brings me here, My fate also brings me to sit on those chairs.. That I'm never doing. I'm not here to wait, especially not for a suspect.

"I'm not waiti-" I stopped in between the sentence. A doctor came out of one of those rooms dragging a suitcase. I turned my attention to the guy. He was almost 5'11, his hair was swept to the side, brown hair greying, yet his face had no wrinkles. Almost in his 60's, I guessed because of the grey hair.

"Hello sir.. Are you leaving, could you buy some time and have a chat with me?"

"I don't buy time, but okay." His deep voice changed my perception of him. He's young. Only a little older than me. I wanted to ask him why his hair was so grey but I couldn't bring myself to it. I'm not here to make sure he dyed his hair.

"A patient died today, am I right?"

"You sure are."

"And you were treating her?"

"Right." His answers were so dry.

"Can you tell me how she died?"

"Well, she ran out of breathe, suffocated herself with those hospital pillows." Finally, something not dry.

"I see.. Where was the pillow?"

"Quite near to hear, actually, right next to her." This raised suspicion. Why lie?

"Okay sir.. Why are you resigning?"

"Not your business.."  I need to find a reason for why a doctor would do this. No one would believe someone like a doctor to kill someone.. Also definitely wont believe a soon to be sheriff..
