Most of my life. My dad wasn't present. When I was 9, he left. It was a peaceful night. I was in a trance. My mom shrieked. They were arguing back and forth and even their noise startled the neighbors. At some point, the police were called. It was 3 am when I was awakened due to the sirens. My mom kept yelling at him even when she noticed the police. I remember her yelling something that still stays with me to this day.
"If you leave us now! You leave us forever Reggie!"
"What do you mean "us"!! She isn't even our kid! I still don't understand why you thought of adopting her just when we came to this city. She is of no use, Diana. NO USE!"
"Oh Reggie! The only reason I adopted her was because I knew I'd have to carry this household on my back because YOU!..YOU were of NO use. Get that to your head Reggie!!"
"Hah. So all of my hard work for that company was of no hard work? I put my sweat and tears in it Diana. I still regret that to this day." He said. His voice sounded shaky and was on the verge of tears
"A company that failed! We believed in you Reggie, but now I think we believed too much." My mom told, this time she didn't yell. She didn't mean anything by what she said. The company was supposed to work, the sad thing is dad's 'partner' cheated. That's all I know. I don't really know how. .
That day, when I heard I was adopted, it broke me. It's not like I haven't thought about it. I have, plenty of times. Both my parents had blonde hair, I had black hair. My brother Arden had blonde hair too. It was kind of obvious. But I didn't think of it too much. When I tried to bring it up in front of my parents, they brushed it off.
My dad loved my mom. To say the least, they loved each other so much. But that didn't stop them from having arguments every week. The reason varied. One day, it was because my dad came home late. Another day, it was because my mom forgot to organize the house before an important guest came. They both made plenty of mistakes. When they used to argue. Arden would come running to my room and talk with me. He would always make me distracted. Half the times they argued, I didn't even know it. Now I realize what he did for me.
After the night dad left, The house was serene. Every little noise sounded blare. The dinners were tranquil. The only time we talked was when my mom needed the salt. One night, I felt so horrible that my family was broken. I cried until I couldn't hide it anymore. I pretty much ran to my mom's room and hugged her.
"Why did he leave mom??" I said sobbing my eyes out.
"Well.. He had so many reasons to leave.. But he still loves us. He will come soon to visit."
"How are you so strong? Why aren't you talking on the dinner nights anymore? Why is this house so quiet . I hate this mom. It sucks more because everything is so different. I don't want this to last. I love you and Arden. I don't want you to do anything to leave me. I don't want you to die.. Please stay mom.." Part of why I cried was because I had this feeling, Since my dad left, My mom would make herself the reason to leave forever. And so would my brother because no one is left. And I'd be left. But its the promise I made to my grandma that still holds on to me.
I was so cautious about my surroundings at such a young age. I grew up handling things by my own. The support my mom provided with was all I had. So I was hanging on by a thread.
I suddenly woke up in the medical beds. They were the most intolerable.. I sat up to see a nurse sitting next to me.
"Are you okay darling? You saved a life tonight. You are truly amazing.."
"Yeah. What happened?"
"Well you saved a life-"
"I know. But how did I reach here?"
"Well, you fainted.. Its when you see blood, Vasovagal syncope is what we exactly call it."
"thanks.. Can I go?"
"Darling. You need to take rest."
"I insist, nurse, thanks for the support but I need to go.."
"If you insist, the door is that way."
I felt dizzy as I got up. It was 12:56 A.M.. I ran outside to see a familiar black car. I walked towards the car about to fall to see my mom sitting with Arden next to her. She stopped and I entered the car.
"We heard what happened.. Are you okay Mel?" Arden asked.
"Oh yeah, I'm just feeling a bit sick, that's all.."
"Take rest from home honey. We're heading home now." Mom told.
