"Here we are." Mario announces upon his return, mushroom in hand. "Whatever's causing that headache, this'll clear it right up."
But when there's no reply, he suddenly notices Luigi's not where he left him.
"Weegee?" he calls out, moving throughout the room, until his foot hits something, nearly making him trip.
"What the--" he looks down, and in seconds, he throws the mushroom aside to kneel down next to Luigi, now lying on the floor, unconscious.
"Weegee?" Mario says to try and wake him up, but Luigi doesn't move or say a word, so Mario reaches for his face, checking for a pulse.
His relief is only palpable when he feels Luigi's heartbeat, as he immediately grabs Luigi's face, patting it gently.
"Weegee, can you hear me?" He begs, but there's still no reply, as he keeps patting Luigi's face and shaking him. "No no no, come on. Wake up. Right now!"
But the longer he tries, the longer it proves to be useless, as Luigi doesn't so much as twitch a muscle.
Mario pulls Luigi into his arms, one hand on the back of his neck, and sobs.
"LUIGI!!!!!!"
Now
"The paramedics are on their way." Mario tells his still unconscious brother, face covered in dry tears. "Hang on for me, please. We're so close to having our lives back. It's all finally over, and I won't celebrate without you."
Mario buries his face in the top of Luigi's head, promising, "I'm not taking one more step without you."
