Two weeks went by without them speaking of the incident again. He had a hard time sleeping at night, worried about Kendra. Then, one early morning, out of the blue, he got a phone call from her. He immediately picked up and tiredly answered,

"Hello?" he could tell from her voice that she had been weeping.
"Jake, I-I have something to tell you." He frantically sat up.
"Kendra, what's wrong?" he asked. A long silence followed.
"Kendra?" he asked, getting a little worried. "Jake, I just took a pregnancy test..." his face was drained of all its color again.
"And..." she started sobbing again.
"And it..." she started hyperventilating. He said to her,
"Kendra, calm down. Just tell me what it is." "It came back... P-positive!" she wailed. "And..." she sniffled, and continued,
"And I'm pretty sure it's yours!" she wailed again.

"Well, what's wrong with it being mine?" he asked, calmly.
"It's not that. What will my mother do?" she said between sobs.
"We'll tell her together, ok?" He reassured her.
"Really?" she asked.
"Really, really." He responded. He could hear her laugh into the microphone a little.
"How are we gonna explain it, though?" "Just tell her part of the truth, you snuck out, we messed around and boom! You're pregnant! We don't need to tell her all the details." Her breathing slowed a bit. He always knew how to calm her down.

When it was daylight, he asked his dad to take him to Kendra's place. He reluctantly agreed and when he got there, Kendra immediately ran into his arms and embraced him, but being careful with her stomach. He embraced her back and she whispered,
"I just want you to know that no matter what happens, I don't regret a single moment."
"Ditto." he whispered back.

She slowly backed away and reached out her hand and he grabbed it, gripping it firmly. She led him into her home, but it felt as if she were leading him to slaughter. She opened the door and he followed her through it. Her mom, Jackie, was sitting there as if she were expecting them. They both sat down in kitchen chairs parallel to the couch and her mother could tell immediately by the way Kendra was handling her stomach that her daughter was pregnant. And she could tell by the way Jake squirmed in his chair nervously that he was most likely the father. The three of them sat there awkwardly in silence, the lovers not looking at each other but still holding hands. "Mom," Kendra finally piped up after what seemed like an eternity of silence,
"I've been sneaking out of the house. And what's worse is that I went to Jake's every time. And every time, we fooled around. But the last time I was there, I-" her mother put her hand up. Kendra clammed up again. "Kendra, I found the pregnancy test in the garbage. I want you to know that while I am disappointed in you, I will always love you. Now, if you'll excuse yourself, I'd like to speak with your boyfriend alone." Kendra sniffled, stood up slowly, and scuffled to her room. She took one last look at Jake and went into her room. Now the spotlight was on Jake. He opened his mouth and said,
"Ms. Richards, I know traditionally I would ask her father, but as she doesn't appear to have one, I'd like to ask you for your blessing to ask for her hand in marriage." she looked at him and after a while, said
"Do you have a ring?" He checked all of his pockets and found it in the smallest one. He pulled it out and held it up to Kendra's mom. "Go to her, then." he stood up and walked confidently into Kendra's room. He saw her sitting anxiously sitting on the bed. He kneeled down and said,
"Kendra, I know we've only been officially together for a year, but I've loved you for much longer than that. Will you do me the greatest privilege and become Mrs. Kendra Whittaker?" She slid off the bed and cupped his face in her hands. She caressed his hair and he started crying again.

"Jake, that night, when I left in such a huff, I immediately started crying when I got in the car. I thought that I had ruined things between us and we were over. But when you texted me good morning the next day, I knew we'd be ok. I just knew I never wanted to feel like that again. So I decided not to mention that night ever again. Until yesterday, when I started to get sick. I rushed to a nearby dollar store at the crack of dawn and got a pregnancy test. But, yes. I'll marry you." He laughed in relief and got up and kissed her. He knew that from that moment on, he would do the best he could to never make her feel that way again. The end.
