Stephanie felt so free and yet quite trapped at the same time. It was Sunday morning and her period was finally almost over. But she had to go back to school on Monday and wasn’t looking forward to making up all the work. But that thought was for later as she had to go to the antique store with Chip.
She had to use a map in order to figure out where Chip’s house was and realized it was too far for her to walk. Well her Mom thought it was too far for her to walk by herself. She was worried about how Stephanie was going to get kidnapped from a clown and get murdered. Her mother has been watching the news too much where children keep going missing and looking at the pictures on the milk cartons.
“I’m sorry honey but I’m not going to risk it. Embry can drive you there.” Her mother restated.
“Why can’t Wolfgang take me?” Stephanie whined.
“Wolfgang went to work 30 minutes ago and I just got out of work 30 minutes ago.” She explained.
“Fine whatever..” Stephanie mumbled to herself. Speaking of Embry, she looked terrible as she walked into the room. She had her hand on her belly and she looked pale as hell. Stephanie glanced at Embry’s sickly state and Embry instantly scowled.
“I’ll take you where you need to go.” Embry said with a hush tone. She grabbed her car keys and left to go outside.
“Is she even okay?” Stephanie questioned rightfully concerning her sister's health.“That girl is so stubborn. Embry is probably hungover but still doing stuff anyway so I guess we can’t fight it anymore.” Her mother mumbled to herself. “Have fun sweetie.” She kissed Stephanie’s forehead and then went to her bedroom to hibernate until her next shift.
Stephanie went outside to where the old pickup truck was parked. She remembered her dad used to drive around to get burgers. He always had such a loud and boisterous laugh. It kinda reminded her of a cat inside the washing machine. She hasn't had that many memories of him since she was only 4 to 5 years old. All she remembered was Him waving goodbye in a soldier’s uniform and the next moment he didn’t come home. Only a letter that made her Mother scream in pain and her siblings cry hugging her. They told her that instead of fighting the war in Vietnam, he was going to fly jets in the clouds. Forever.
Stephanie opened the passenger car door. It squeaked as it was quite an old truck. It was older than Stephanie, maybe even older than Wolfgang! She entered the car and closed the door on her way out. Embry nagged her to put her seatbelt on so she did it. She didn’t want to be yelled at for not doing it
“Aight slugger lets go.” Embry announced. She started to drive. Stephanie saw the scattered tapes and decided to play some music. She put in a disco track and Embry didn’t mind it so she was happy. Stephanie vibed to the disco music and bounced in her car seat as bopped her head gleefully. Then Embry turned the music off unexpectedly.
“Hey! What was that for!” Stephanie whined. She got annoyed and turned her head towards Embry who was still driving.
“Be careful out there.” She said out of the blue
“What?” Stephanie spoke. She was confused and frankly unsure of where the hell Embry was going with this conversation.
“Look boys can be little shits sometimes. They have ulterior motivations involving things that are scary. I know he's just your classmate but just don't trust him too much yet.” Embry hesitantly told Stephanie.
“Okay I won't.” Stephanie spoke. Embry nodded her head and turned the disco music back on. Stephanie saw the house through her window.
It was an average size home with what looked to be three stories. It had a shingle roof and the outside of it was cream colored. The thing that stood out the most was a huge tree standing right in front of it. There was a tire swing hanging from it. The front lawn was scattered with toys and gardening tools. There was a wooden fence surrounding the property and it looked freshly painted.
