Chapter 20: Unexpected Turns

As the day unfolded, I strived to immerse myself in the routine tasks at hand, endeavoring to segregate the emotional upheaval stemming from Harry's recent rejection. The day's agenda was dominated by a critical client meeting, a juncture crucial not only for Harry's business but for my professional duties as well. The morning progressed with sparse exchanges between Harry and me, a circumstance I found quietly comforting. I favored the newfound distance, serving as a safeguard against the lingering discomfort from his denial. In his office, I tackled each assignment with precision, deliberately steering clear of any discussions that might veer towards our fleeting lapse in judgment.

Despite the prevailing awkwardness, Harry's esteem for my professional insights was unmistakable. My academic background in business wasn't merely ornamental on my CV; it had always been a cornerstone of Harry's reliance on my judgment, a dynamic of our work relationship that I now held onto more than ever, a beacon in the tumultuous emotional fog.

The commencement of the meeting introduced an unforeseen element—Alex's presence. Aware of the childhood bond between Harry and Alex, I hadn't anticipated the striking resemblance in their allure. While Harry might hold a slight edge in handsomeness, Alex's appeal was undeniable. It seemed to me that wealth and good looks were common denominators among Harry's acquaintances. His circle, including his best friend Sean, was a mosaic of charm and charisma, each bearing their unique essence—some were brash, others gentle, but all undeniably attractive. Alex, with his sharp gray eyes and a physique honed by discipline, made an impressionable entrance, his extended handshake and engaging smile igniting an unanticipated warmth in my cheeks.

Alex's exuberance was palpable. "Harry, you've caught wind of the news, right? I'm back, and at the helm of my family's enterprise. You were the first person on my mind, eager to cement our deal," he paused, his gaze shifting towards me, his smile widening. "And who might this enchanting lady be?" he inquired, his glance flitting between Harry and me, a mischievous glint in his eyes.

Harry's introduction was terse, laced with a hint of possessiveness. "This is Bella, my personal assistant and my advisor. Let's cut to the chase, Alex. Spare my assistant your flirtations—she's not interested. Now, let's get down to business," he retorted, his patience thinning.

Alex, unfazed by Harry's brusque tone, shifted his full attention to me, momentarily sidelining the purpose of his visit. "I'm Alex, Harry's friend—the better-looking one, undoubtedly. No competition there," he quipped, his smile broad and unabashedly flirtatious, much to Harry's chagrin.

I offered a polite response, trying to navigate the increasingly charged atmosphere. "I'm Bella. It's a pleasure to meet you, Mr. Cooper," I said.

"Please, call me Alex," he insisted, his charm offensive in full swing.

At this point, Harry's frustration boiled over, prompting him to interject sharply. "Are we going to focus on why we're here, or shall we call off the deal, Alex?" he snapped, his tone brooking no further delay.

Alex shot back with a taunt, aiming to needle Harry further.

"Oh, don't get jealous, Harry. It's just that she seems to enjoy my company more than 'grumpy Harry.' Tell me, Bella, is he still sporting that perpetual frown?" he teased, turning his attention to me with a playful challenge.

Caught between their rivalry, I couldn't help but laugh at the accuracy of Alex's observation. Harry could indeed be quite gruff. However, recognizing the need to steer the conversation back on track, I smiled diplomatically at Alex and redirected the focus. "The deal at hand is what excites me. Let's delve into that, shall we?"
