Two weeks had passed since the break-up. Like every morning, Fran studied the job offers, when she discovered an ad that made her heart beat faster. A nanny was sought for a household with three children and the address seemed very familiar to her. Her eyes began to shine as she read the ad.
"Did you find a cool job?" asked Val.
"Yeah! The best job in the whole wide world."She tapped on the advertisement with her fingers. Val smiled when she read what kind of job it was, but she was also quite irrated.
"Mr. Sheffield is looking for a new nanny? I thought the kids don't want a nanny anymore. And why is he looking for a nanny in the newspaper?"
Fran thought about the questions for a moment.
"I guess Niles was nagging him again and begged him. The kids had indicated that Niles often complains about the extra work and the thing with the newspaper...probably it's the only way. All agencies hang up immediately when they hear the name "Sheffield." Val smiled.
Well, anyway, now you know what you have to do."
Oh yes, Fran knew that. The next day Fran stood in front of the mirror, fully styled. She wore her black costume with fur trim, which she had worn when she entered the Sheffield mansion for the first time. She took a blank sheet of paper, rummaged for her red lipstick and scribbled down a perfect reference. She made her way to the Park Avenue and soon rang the bell at the front door she was very familiar with.
Niles opened and suppressed a cry of jubilation; his secret dream had come true. With a big happy smile he greeted her in the best butler manner.
"Hello, may I help you?" Fran laughed and played along.
"My name is Fran Fine; I would like to talk to Mr. Sheffield. I'm coming for the job as a nanny."
"Do you have any references with you?"
"Of course, here!"
With a grin, she handed him the lipstick-smeared note. "Please follow me!"They went to the office, Niles knocked.
"Sorry Sir, another nanny wants to introduce herself to you. Here are her references."
"She may come in!" growled Mr. Sheffield, taking the reference without looking at it.
He was in a very bad mood. The search for a nanny had been a pure disaster by now. Which women imagine today, they could work as a nanny."Hello Mr. Sheffield!"
Maxwell could hardly believe his ears. That couldn't be true. However, this voice was unique and could only belong to one person in the world. He looked up and the smile on his face got wider and wider. Now he saw the reference written with lipstick.
"Hello Miss Fine! You want to work as our nanny. Let’s have me a look at your references. Oh is that cream?" "Lipstick!" replied Fran with a giggles.
"Of course and what a lovely shade! As I read your former boss seemed very satisfied with you."
"Well...sometimes we disagreed about the children and he was often angry when I interfered in his personal matters or his business and he was usually quite upset when I hired my relatives for work and..."
Maxwell tried hard not to laugh.
"Well all this sounds like you're just the right person for the job. But there's still one condition."Fran's jaw dropped. Maxwell continued.
"The children have to agree. I promised them not to hire a nanny without their approval. You know the previous nanny gave me the advice to pay more attention to my children's opinions and take them seriously." Fran grinned.
"A smart woman, your former nanny and furthermore you are a wise father if you follow this advice."
Maxwell stood up and opened the door.
"Follow me into the living room!"
As he walked by, Maxwell whispered to Fran.
"Nice to have you back."He went to the grand staircase.
"Children please come down! I want to introduce you to someone."
The three slowly came down the stairs. They feared for the worst. Even if their father promised them not to hire a nanny they don't like, they were not happy about the prospect to get a new nanny.
"Come on, I think I've found just the right nanny for you."
The children stared at the woman in the living room. "FRAAAAAAAN!"
Shouted everyone at the same time, they were looking in disbelief alternately at their father and then back to Fran."Is it true?" Gracie finally asked.
"You will be our nanny again?"
"I think so!" Fran laughed.
"On the condition you agree with my choice!" their father added.
In response they all ran to Fran and hugged her that they all fell together on the couch. Fran was happier than she had been for a long time. She had her job back and was back home.Later before the kids went to bed, they were all in Gracie's room and Fran told them one of her scary stories.
"So enough for today. Off to bed!"
But Brighton still had a question on his mind.
"Fran is it my fault that you broke up with Danny? I mean because of the incident in the park."
"Nooo!" assured Fran him and took him in her arms. "You are not to blame for anything at all. Quite the opposite, I must be forever grateful to all of you. You have opened my eyes or I would have made the biggest mistake of my life."
No one noticed that their father overheard the conversation. Apparently, there had occurred an incident of which he knew nothing about. He wondered what it could be.When all three were in bed, Fran came down the stairs and sat down with her boss in the living room. She made herself comfortable on the couch and sighed. "Oy, did I miss all of this!"
Mr. Sheffield looked at her.
"You were missed incredibly in this house Miss Fine by all of us. Thank God you're back."
"Oh Mista Sheffield, who would assume, you would say that one day!"
They both laughed, then there was a moment of silence. Maxwell cleared his throat.
"I have to make a confession. I just overheard a part of the conversation between you and the children." Fran turned red.
"Mr. Sheffield, I can assure you, your children haven’t done anything wrong. I broke up with Danny because he's a jerk. He always has been and always will be!" "And what about your saying, everyone can change and deserves a second chance?"
"Well, everyone can change and deserves a second chance except Danny Imperali!"
