After Fran said goodbye to the children and brought them back home, she was on her way to Queens. Her mind returned to the unpleasant scene earlier. She had made a decision. She would leave Danny today and this time forever and for good. With a man who could be so cruel and is capable of hitting a child, she couldn’t be married with and certainly she wouldn't want to produce own offsprings with him.

At Danny's apartment, she first called Val and gave her a brief report of the situation. She asked if she could sleep at her place for a few days. Luckily Vals parents were abroad, so Val agreed. Fran packed her belongings, put the engagement ring and apartment keys on the kitchen table and was about to leave when Danny entered the apartment.
"What's going on here?"
Danny was still very upset with Fran. Fran eyes stared at him, hateful.
"What does it look like?"
"You want to dump me because of this spoiled brat?"
Fran got even more furious.

"Shut up right now! I'm not leaving because of Brighton or the girls. I'm going because of you." "Because of me??? I didn't do anything."
"And what would you call your behaviour this afternoon? You know very well, the three have lost their mother and you are so crude to insult her in front of the children and dare to slap Brighton. And for what? In the matter of fact, he was right. You're completely stupid and you have an empty head."
Pang!
Danny hit Fran across the face with such force that she almost fell.
"Alright get out of here! You come crawling back anyway. Without me you are nothing."

Fran grabbed her suitcases and left. Downstairs in front of the house was Val already waiting for her. She ran towards her to help her with the luggage.
"Oh my God! What did he do?"
She could clearly see the straps and the bruise on her cheek.
"Nothing! I just want to get away from here."

Later Fran was lying on the couch and cooled her cheek with an icepack. Val did her best to cheer Fran up. She ordered Fran's favorite pizza and hurried to the video store to borrow all movies with Barbra Streisand.

On Monday, Fran had regained some strength. She was eager to find a new job and an apartment.
"Why don't you go to Mr. Sheffield? You can certainly work again as his nanny" Val suggested. Fran hesitated.
"I don't know. I feel so foolish. I mean I left them because I wanted to marry Danny. I can't crawl back now just because it's over. I'm terribly ashamed. I was so dumb."

Fran hardly had the courage to leave the house all week. The bruises on her face were still visible despite the best make-up. For this reason, she had deceived the children and told them that she was sick with a stomach flu and therefore could not meet them.
In order not to arouse suspicious, she called the children daily.
But more she tried to avoid the neighborhood at the moment. Everyone was talking about Danny, her and their breakup. Danny spread the wildest rumors, why Fran had left him and played the victim. Her mother whined on the phone; this embarrassment would take her to her grave.
