Hung on my wall is a quote attributed to Joan of Arc:

'I am not afraid. I was born to do this.'

However my life unfolds, goes my thinking, is how I am meant to live it;

however my life unspools, I was created to bear it.

-Esme Weijun Wang, 'The Collected Schizophrenias'

Joan was given a slip of paper with a name, a heavy trenchcoat, and a book. Nothing more, nothing less. Joan is pretty sure a revival like theirs is entitled to a little bit of shock and horror, but they haven't seen any zombie movies, so they can't be sure. And besides, their legal guardian is a walking, wise-cracking skeleton with no visible muscle matter, so maybe strange things are more common than originally believed.

Stephanie is boring, average, and twelve. When her uncle dies suddenly, she becomes not just a twelve year old with a dead uncle, she becomes a twelve year old with a dead uncle, a house, and a sudden hunger for the strange. She becomes something so much cooler.

Skulduggery Pleasant didn't always have such a plainly ridiculous name, in the same way he didn't always have such a clear view of his molars. He's all bone now, no flesh, no muscle, all cracking and clicking and bleaching in the sun. He wasn't always this way. He can't remember ever being anything else.

Tanith Low doesn't get paid enough to describe herself.

Holy places are dark places...

Holy wisdom is not clear and thin like water,

but thick and dark like blood.

C.S. Lewis, 'Till we have faces: A Myth Retold'
